C.B. Aycock's Sasser handcuffs Hunt in ECC 3-A play

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock left-hander Grant Sasser tossed his second straight complete-game shutout as the Golden Falcons claimed an 8-0 win at Wilson Hunt on Friday in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play.

The Golden Falcons (12-1 overall) improved to 3-0 in the ECC. Hunt (3-9 overall) slipped to 1-2 in league play.

Sasser (5-0) yielded just three hits and struck out 11 against no walks. No runners advanced past first base against the southpaw, who was in command of the strike zone throughout the game.

"He's in a groove. He's thrown the ball well, especially the last two outings," Aycock coach Charles Davis said. "He got ahead of his hitters ... out of 76 pitches only 16 were balls. Bennett Jeffreys (catcher) called a good game. He and Grant work well together."

Jeffreys led Aycock at the plate, slugging his first and second home runs of the season and driving in three runs. Will Spence added three his and an RBI, while Joseph Toler and Sasser posted two hits each with Sasser helping his cause with a pair of RBI.

Matt Watson endured the loss for Hunt, also going the distance.

The Falcons host archrival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Hunt travels to Southern Wayne.

Chargers bounce back at SCHS

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Coming off a loss to Rosewood on Tuesday, Ayden-Grifton bounced back with a 14-4 win at Spring Creek in six innings on Friday in Carolina 1-A Conference action.

Tyler Dunn, Matt Tripp and Anthony Edwards had two hits each for the Chargers (10-2, 1-1 Carolina), while Richie Pait picked up the win -- going the distance.

Timothy Rogers endured the loss for the Gators (0-10, 0-2 Carolina) in 21/3 innings of work. Spring Creek coach Roger May used five different pitchers, which combined to give up nine hits and nine earned runs.

On Tuesday, Spring Creek travels to Rosewood, while the Chargers host North Duplin.

Rams claim EPC opener

BETHEL -- Curtis Braswell banged out two extra-base hits and drove in four runs in Greene Central's 10-6, non-conference victory over Kinston on Saturday afternoon.

Braswell doubled and tripled in four plate appearances for the Rams, who improved to 7-3 overall. Teammate Hunter Chase doubled and plated a run in a 2-for-5 showing. Drew Sowers collected three RBI and Trey Beamon (RBI) contributed two hits.

William Brown provided 22/3 innings of one-hit, three-strikeout relief en route to the mound victory.

Hines Guttenberger and Antonio Whitfield each produced two hits for the Vikings. Andy Spence suffered the mound loss.

Chase had three hits in the Rams' 3-1 win at North Pitt on Friday in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams. Michael Speedy added two hits for the Rams, while Tyler Chase doubled.

Sowers got the win on the mound for Greene Central.

The Rams continue EPC play at home next Tuesday against league newcomer Goldsboro.

WCS edges Cape Fear

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian's T.A. Brannan and Adam Brannan had a double and two RBI each in the Eagles' 8-7 win at Cape Fear Christian on Thursday.

Andrew Bass added two hits and drove in one run for the Eagles (6-2 overall), who improved to 5-0 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference.

Tyler Thomas picked up the win in 61/3 innings of work for WCS, while Adam Brannan notched the save.

The Eagles host Cary Christian on Tuesday.

Tarboro tops Goldsboro

Goldsboro's Monquavis Edwards and Donald Lewis had two hits each in the Cougars' 32-3 loss at home against Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro on Friday.

Eric McLean and Freddy Frazier added one hit each for Goldsboro (0-6, 0-1).

Edwards endured the loss on the mound for the Cougars, who travel to Greene Central on Tuesday.

Saints cruise past Kinston

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne's Meredith Davis led a balanced hitting attack with three hits and four RBI as the Saints dropped Kinston, 12-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Friday.

The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Rachel Reynolds, Jordan Hill and Haley Fail added two hits each for Southern Wayne (9-5 overall), which improved to 2-1 in the ECC. Lauren Darden helped her pitching cause with a triple and three runs scored.

Darden struck out 10 against just two walks and gave up one run on six hits in six innings of work.

The Saints battle unbeaten Wilson Hunt (13-0, 3-0) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Hunt tops CBA in eight innings

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock's Kandace Burroughs got the Golden Falcons' lone hit in a 1-0 loss at Wilson Hunt in eight innings on Friday.

Aycock (6-6 overall) slipped to 2-1 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, while the Warriors (13-0 overall) improved to 3-0 in league play.

Burroughs hit against Brittany Farmer came in the sixth, but Aycock failed to capitalize on the opportunity as her courtesy runner, Heather Farmer, was stranded at second.

Allison Holland scored Hunt's lone run against the Falcons' Emily Jordan in the bottom of the eighth. Holland started the inning with a single, then a two-base error by the left fielder advanced her to third.

Hunt loaded the bases with bunts by Karen Coleman and Casey Strickland, then Holland scored on a high throw from first to the plate after a ground ball by Abby Earle.

Jordan yielded just four hits and struck out eight against no walks. Farmer allowed one hit with one walk and six strikeouts.

Aycock returns to action on Tuesday at home against Eastern Wayne.

Hawks drop Farmville Central

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Kayla Sutton had three hits and two RBI as the Hawks' defeated Farmville Central, 11-2 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

Lauren Hudson added three hits and drove in one for North Lenoir, which improved to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the EPC.

Brittany Sanders got the win for the Hawks, striking out 10 with two hits and one walk.

North Lenoir travels to Tarboro on Tuesday.

North Lenoir remains unbeaten

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Haley Bright tallied a hat trick (three goals) in the Hawks' 11-0 win at home over Kinston on Friday.

The non-conference win improves the Hawks to 11-0-1 overall.

Katie Maloney added two goals for North Lenoir, while Sasha Holeman, Jordan Hudson, Gabby Hill, Lindsay Walton and Erin Hill added one goal each.

The Hawks battle Rosewood on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Norris, Ipock pace Eagles' attack

WILSON -- Brooke Norris and Charlie Ipock each notched a hat trick (three goals) in Wayne Christian's 8-1 victory over Trinity Christian-Greenville in The Brittney II contested Saturday morning.

Norris recorded her second hat trick of the week, while Ipock turned in her first three-goal effort of the season.

Meredith Craig and Sterling Coggins each added a goal for the Eagles, who claimed their third consecutive win.

Wayne Christian (5-4) entertains Cary Christian next Tuesday.

Chargers drop CPIC road contest

WILSON -- Greenfield claimed sole possession of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference lead with a 4-2 victory over nemesis Wayne Country Day on Friday afternoon.

Virginia Best and Georgia Crow each netted one goal and one assist for the Chargers, who slipped to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Greenfield (3-3, 2-0 CPIC) avenged a loss to Wayne Country Day in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs.

The teams played again Saturday in The Brittney II at Wilson.

RHS boys, NJ girls claim wins

Rosewood's boys and North Johnston's girls emerged with victories in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Thursday at the Eagles' track.

Devon Bennett claimed two individual wins in the 100 meters (11.28) and 200 meters (24.24), then helped the Eagles claim two first-place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x100.

Rosewood finished with 78 team points, while the Panthers had 67.

In the girls meet, North Johnston edged the Eagles, 70-68.

Sa'Coya Cox paced the Panthers with wins in the shot put (29-4) and discus (98-10), while Sherlita McFall took first in the 100 meters (13.42) and 200 meters (30.07). The Eagles took three-of-four relay events.

Rosewood hosts Spring Creek on Thursday.

Saints' Douglas no-hits W-RH

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Michael Douglas pitched a no-hitter in five innings of work as the Saints claimed a 15-0 win at home over Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday.

Douglas struck out 11 for Southern Wayne (3-6) and added two hits at the plate.

Scott Holloman posted two hits, including a home run, with three RBI for the Saints, while Bruce Rose, Jordan Williams and Douglas contributed two hits each. Southern Wayne pounded out 15 hits overall.

The Saints travel to Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Aycock improves to 12-1

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Stephen Strouse and Will Edgerton had three hits each in the Golden Falcons' 12-8 win over North Lenoir on Wednesday.

Bryant Hill got the win in relief for Aycock (12-1), which hosted Wilson Hunt on Friday.
