MOUNT OLIVE -- Former Charles B. Aycock standout Philip Pennington and Justin Staatz each claimed a pitching win as Mount Olive swept Chowan 9-5 and 5-4 in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field.

Pennington (4-2) surrendered four earned runs on nine hits and recorded one strikeout in four-plus innings of work during the opener. Junior right-hander Donald Huff notched his third save of the season with two innings of two-strikeout relief.

Junior Dustin Richardson led the Trojans with three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI offensively. David Cooper and Stephen Nordan each batted 2-for-2. Cooper stole two bases and walked twice, while Nordan produced two RBI.

Chowan collected three runs in the top half of the seventh inning, but Justin Staatz held on for the complete-game victory. A senior right-hander, Staatz yielded four runs (three earned) on four hits and was victimized by three errors behind him.

Staatz fanned nine Chowan batters and walked five.

Former Eastern Wayne standout Graham Wooten tripled and finished the contest 2-for-2. Teammate Lance Martin provided two hits -- a double and triple -- in two plate appearances.

Mount Olive improved to 25-11 overall, while Chowan dropped to 16-12. The teams will play another doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m.

MOC sweeps Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER -- Senior Mariana Shimoda pulled out a three-set thriller and Mount Olive College nipped Pfeiffer 5-4 in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.

The Trojan men, ranked No. 38 nationally, swept the Falcons 9-0. Pfeiffer managed to take just one set in the nine matches contested.

Shimoda, the No. 2 seed, split the first two sets against Andrea Stroup. Stroup couldn't overcome a foot injury as Shimoda prevailed 6-2 in the third set.

Senior Lucia Henkle, the Trojans' No. 1 seed, picked up a straight-set singles win. Carol Salgado De Aro triumphed at No. 3 singles.

Henkle-Aro and Shimoda-Lauren Harris each earned a doubles victory.

Gabriel Garcia, Bruno Capato, Guilherme Serra, Efrain Cayana, Felipe Olarte and Danny Mosteanu each produced a singles win for the MOC men.

The same six combined to capture all three doubles points.

Mount Olive's women return to action next Tuesday at UNC Pembroke. The men play host to CVAC foe Belmont Abbey next Friday at 3 p.m.
