C.B. Aycock's Massey yields Gators to two hits

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jackson Massey yielded two hits and notched eight strikeouts as Charles B. Aycock cruised past Spring Creek 12-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials halted the contest after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Gators (0-4) plated two earned runs against Massey, who earned his first mound win of the year.

Bennett Jeffreys emerged Aycock's top offensive player with three hits, including a double, and two RBI in four at-bats. Joseph Toler batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Bradley Taylor doubled and tripled, and plated two runs.

Aycock had 10 hits overall against four Gator pitchers.

avenges defeat

Eastern Wayne reliever Chad Sutton survived a seventh-inning flurry and earned the save in the Warriors' 4-3, non-conference victory over South Central on Tuesday afternoon.

Sutton provided one inning of two-hit, one-strikeout relief as Eastern Wayne (1-2) avenged a loss last week to the Falcons. Senior Tyler Ham started and scattered five hits in a six-inning stint. Michael Mintz also pitched in the seventh.

Joey Moye led the Warriors with three hits and an RBI in four at-bats. Taylor Sutton doubled. Ham and Jackson Frederick each collected an RBI.

"We played good defense and had good pitching for the most part," said veteran Eastern Wayne coach Jabo Fulghum, whose team didn't commit an error on defense. "That's what kept us in the game."

Eastern Wayne entertains North Lenoir, the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state champion, at 5 p.m. Friday.

Rebels collect

first win of year

CALYPSO -- Robert McCullen smacked his first home run of the season in the fifth inning and North Duplin dealt Lakewood a 9-7 defeat in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon.

McCullen concluded the day 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. He hit the round-tripper in the fourth inning to give the Rebels a 7-6 lead.

Billy Mello added two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Wade Sasser and Rock Bennett each plated a run. Ryan Killette and Doug Lloyd each provided one hit.

Chris Graham seized the pitching win in relief of Lloyd, who started, and middle reliever Rock Bennett. Graham (1-0) yielded two hits and struck out three Leopard batters in three innings.

Matt Davis carded a nine-hole round of 38 as Wayne Christian cruised past Cape Fear Christian 157-193 in a Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference match contested Tuesday afternoon at Walnut Creek.

Eric Williams and Hayden Gardner each added a 39 for the Eagles, the reigning N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state champions. Clark Rose provided a 41.

Cape Fear's Tyler Hoyle claimed medalist honors with a 37.

Wayne Christian (2-1, 2-0 CCC) plays host to Greenfield School next Tuesday afternoon.

at Wedgewood

WILSON -- Josh Elmore seized medalist honors with a 74 and Greene Central rolled past Wilson Beddingfield 325-372 in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon at Wedgewood Golf Course.

Colby Murphy complemented Elmore with an 18-hole score of 80. Blake Sutton chipped in an 84, while Brandon Jones carded an 87.

Ryan Pittman emerged the Bruins' low scorer with an 80.

Greene Central (2-2) is the guest of South Central on Thursday. The match will be played at Brook Valley CC in Greenville.

Hawks endure

first loss of year

DEEP RUN -- South Lenoir parlayed three hits and three walks into four runs and knocked off archrival North Lenoir 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

Kayla Sutton and Lauren Hudson (3 RBI) paced the Lady Hawks with two hits each. Brittany McPhail collected one hit in two at-bats.

Brittany Sanders suffered the loss on the mound. The junior left-hander scattered three hits and recorded eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

North Lenoir (4-1) travels to Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Eagles pick

up third victory

Brittany Sullivan threw a one-hitter and notched seven strikeouts in Wayne Christian's 10-0, non-conference victory over Spirit of Life on Tuesday afternoon.

Kayla Kennedy provided one inning of two-strikeout in relief of Sullivan. The game was called after 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Sullivan missed hitting for the cycle with a single, double and home run. Tracie Davis, Charity Wright and Lindley Pierce each contributed two hits.

Wayne Christian (3-0) entertains Bethel Christian on March 16.

Rebels claim

CALYPSO -- Not many teams can survive when giving up five runs on 15 defensive errors.

North Duplin did.

Jessica Pridgen and Kayla Myers combined for a no-hitter and the Rebels escaped Lakewood 6-5 in a nine-inning affair Tuesday afternoon.

Pridgen recorded three strikeouts and flirted with a perfect game through four innings. Myers surrendered five runs (one earned) and collected 10 strikeouts in a five-inning stint.

Brittany Carr doubled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth. It was Carr's lone hit in four at-bats.

Elizabeth Lane singled and doubled in three plate appearances. Jodie Williamson batted 2-for-2. Heather Hudson each added a single. Kristen Jones and Casey Pate each drove in a run.

DUDLEY -- D.H. Conley right-hander Suzanne Riggs threw a complete-game, 6-0 shutout against Southern Wayne on Tuesday evening.

Riggs scattered six hits and walked two Saints batters.

Alyssa Bradshaw led Southern Wayne (2-2) with two hits in two plate appearances. Lynn Grantham, Morgan Davis, Lauren Darden and Brianna Lofton each had one hit.

Lauren Darden allowed seven runs (one earned) on eight hits and recorded eight strikeouts in five innings. Davis provided two innings of two-strikeout, one-hit relief.

The Saints, who entertain Wilmington Laney today, committed three errors defensively.

Alex Bryant squeezed out a third-set tiebreaker in singles and helped Eastern Wayne turn back North Lenoir 8-1 on the Wayne Community College courts Tuesday afternoon.

Bryant, the No. 4 seed, split sets with Taylor Holmes before taking a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 win. Teammates Jared Stone, Drew Jackson, Andrew Ziccardi and David Benton each posted a straight-set singles win. Ziccardi didn't lose a game at No. 3.

The Warriors swept the doubles.

Ryan Kramer picked up the Hawks' lone singles victory.

Rosewood prevailed in five of six singles matches and cruised past East Duplin 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Ty Johnson, Daniel Ellis, Drew Kriger, Josh Fail and Trevor Morris each collected a pro-set (eight-game) win in singles. The tandems of Johnson-Ellis and Fail-Morris each triumphed in doubles.

East Duplin captured wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

dominate meet

Eastern Wayne swept the relays and subsequently swept Southern Wayne and Kinston in a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Little Big Horn on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors collected first-place finishes in 11 events and racked up 98 points. The Saints finished second with 40, while the Vikings amassed 28.

Noelle Kelly claimed the 200 and 400-meter dashes and also ran the anchor leg on the winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams. Shannon Rouse (3,200 run), LaNiece Sims (300 hurdles), Kamyra Lawson (discus), Lauren Bynum (shot put) and Tiara Campbell (800) each picked up an individual win.

Eastern Wayne (4-0) entertains Wilson Fike and Rocky Mount Senior High on Thursday.

CVAC Pitcher of Week

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive relief pitcher Donald Huff has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Huff becomes the second Trojan this season to earn baseball pitcher or player of the week honors.

Huff, a junior right-hander from Titusville, Fla., earned a conference win in relief Sunday against St. Andrews, allowing no runs and only one hit in the final 21/3 innings after St. Andrews had erupted for nine runs and 13 hits through the first 62/3 innings. He retired eight of the 10 batters he faced in the game and 11 of 13 batters in two appearances during the week.

For the season, Huff is 4-0 with two saves in seven appearances and has yet to allow a run in 2006. He has retired 43 of the first 50 batters he has faced and only two baserunners have advanced past first base. Huff has allowed only three hits and has limited opponents to an .059 batting average.

Huff is 2-0 with one save in conference games this season. The Trojans are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in CVAC play in games in which Huff has pitched this season.

Mount Olive (14-5 overall, 5-4 CVAC) is tied as the 34th-highest vote-getter in this week's Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 Poll.

graders stop GC

GREENVILLE -- Josh Kozdup yielded three hits and collected five strikeouts as the D.H. Conley ninth-grade team posted a 2-1 victory over Greene Central on Tuesday afternoon.

Kozdup worked five innings for the Vikings.

Chris Nethercutt doubled in a 2-for-3 outing for the Rams. Alex Brann added one hit in three plate appearances.

Scott Murphy took the mound loss, surrendering 10 hits and striking out four in six innings.

Greene Central (0-3) is the guest of C.B. Aycock on Friday.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock tallied the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh and nipped J.H. Rose 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon.

There were two outs when the game-winning run score.

Will Edgerton led the Golden Falcons with three hits, including a double. Steven Strouse, Jackson Wooten and Bryant Hill each contributed two hits.

Hill seized the pitching win in relief of starter Jay Rose.

Fidlers help

Parrott to 2-A title

RALEIGH -- Goldsboro native and Arendell Parrott Academy student Billy Fidler claimed second in the 100 butterfly and helped the Patriots to second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay as Parrott won the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A state title on Feb. 20 at Ravenscroft School.

The Patriots claimed first with a score of 97, just ahead of Cannon School, which finished with 96.

P.J. Fidler, also of Goldsboro, participated in four events for the Parrott girls team, which took fourth in the state.

Middle schools

Rosewood softball 16, Mount Olive 2 -- April Rains had two triples for Rosewood, while Heather Silvani and Gabby Cornman added two hits each. Silvani picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles (1-1), who travel to Norwayne today.

Eastern Wayne baseball 10, Grantham 1 -- Michael Fields, Zachary Beachem and Johnathan Jenkins combined on a two-hitter for the Warriors. Jose Ponce led Eastern Wayne (2-0) at the plate with three hits. On March 2, Eastern Wayne defeated Greene County 13-3. Ponce, Jenkins and Josh Frederick led the Warriors on the mound, while Beachem and Fields provided two hits each for Eastern Wayne.
