Rosewood grapplers post another 20-win season

HAMPSTEAD -- Rosewood High posted its fourth consecutive 20-win season and Jim Bish moved within one victory of reaching the century mark in a dual-team sectional contested at Topsail High School.

The Eagles collected their 20th victory overall with a 42-39 decision over Albemarle in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs. Rosewood's postseason run ended with a 69-12 loss against the host Pirates.

To have any success against Albemarle, the Eagles had to avoid a matchup with junior and two-time state placer Cameron Drye. Drye weighed in at 128 pounds, and could wrestle either 130 or 135.

Albemarle showed first at 130 and sent Carlos Lewis on the mat.

Rosewood senior Matt Davis (162-36 career) trotted out and pinned Lewis in 43 seconds. Drye got the forfeit at 135 and veteran Eagles coach Bill Edmundson knew minimal damage had been done.

Anthony Gibson earned a second-period fall at 140.

Albemarle won five of the final seven matches, but gave up a costly forfeit at heavyweight. That allowed the Eagles to claim a three-point win and advance to the eastern semfinals for the fourth time in the last five years.

"I thought our team showed great control and we won where our experience was," said Edmundson, whose all-time playoff record is 10-10 since 1996. "Another key to winning the first round was J.D. Baker not giving up the pin at 119 pounds.

"He fought off his back against a very good wrestler."

Bish improved to 99-35 in his career with a second-period fall against Albemarle's Steven Woody. Bish later suffered a tough 14-13 loss against Topsail's James Brown.

Josh Holmes (125 pounds) and Chris Hare (130) each recorded a fall against Topsail.

Rosewood concluded the year 20-8.

Rams finish

1-1 in 2-A action

HENDERSON -- Greene Central concluded its most-successful wrestling season by claiming its first-ever victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A dual-team playoffs.

The Rams opened tournament play with a 39-36 conquest of Cedar Ridge at Southern Vance. Perennial power West Stokes dealt coach Dan Miner's club a 71-12 loss in the second round, ending Greene Central's season at 15-6.

"We were very happy to advance to the final 16," said Miner, whose team improved on last year's 9-14 mark. "It was good for our guys to experience this level of wrestling (against West Stokes). This is the next step.

"West Stokes is a great team, and obviously very experienced. My experienced guys (second-year wrestlers) did a good job staying in their matches, but all ended up getting caught."

Greene Central and Cedar Ridge finished tied 7-7 in head-to-head matches. Robert Phillips (127 pounds), John Anderson (132), Cameron Taylor (137), Tim McNair (147), Craig Dodd (162), Darrin Gorham (191) and Marquis Eanes (191) each posted an individual win for the Rams.

Gorham and Eanes each drew a forfeit against West Stokes.
