Rosewood's Davis sets new career win record

KENLY -- Senior captain Matt Davis emerged the all-time career wins leader in Rosewood wrestling history during the Eagles 53-27 triumph over North Johnston.

Davis pinned the Panthers' Josh Skinner in 34 seconds, giving him a career record of 154-35. Former Rosewood standout Ramsey Brown, who graduated last season, previously owned the record of 153 career victories.

The Eagles (17-7) remained unbeaten in four Class 1-A Carolina/Tar-Roanoke Conference matches heading into Saturday's triangular meet against Spring Creek and Manteo. The first dual match begins at 11 a.m.

Chris Hare put Rosewood on the board with a second-period fall against 130-pounder Justin Paul. Davis, now 37-4 this season, topped Skinner. Teammates Anthony Gibson (140) and Byron Cavenaugh (145) each notched a pin to give the Eagles a 24-0 advantage in the overall match score.

North Johnston put together a 26-6 run to pull within 30-27.

But the Panthers' comeback attempt ended when they yielded back-to-back forfeits to the Eagles' Gabe Castro (103) and Olivia Neal (112). Jim Bish posted career win No. 94 with a five-minute fall against Dean Jones at 119 pounds.

J.D. Baker finished off North Johnston with a technical fall against Roger Willoughby.

"We had an opening tonight at 145 (pounds), so we bumped everyone from Gabe at 103 up a weight class to fill the hole," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson. "Our heavyweight (Trevor Morris) weighed in, but did not wrestle due to an injury. North Johnston gets better every time we see them.

"Their athletes are very physically strong and I can tell they are giving their coaches everything they have."

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central emerged victorious in eight of the evening's final nine matches and rolled past North Pitt 57-22 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

The Rams (11-3) completed EPC play 4-0 for the first time in school history.

North Pitt, which finished winless in four conference matches, grabbed a 16-12 lead after five individual matches had been completed.

Darrin Gorham ignited a 30-0 run with a first-period pin against the Panthers' Marcus Soles at 191 pounds. Heavyweight Justin Welllington and 114-pounder James Thomas each contributed a pin during that stretch.

Marquis Eanes (217 pounds) and Phillip Freeman (105) each drew a forfeit.

The Rams also received individual victories from Tim McNair (147), Robert Tyndall (154), Robert Phillips (127), Cameron Taylor (132) and Chris Jones (137).

Greene Central returns to action Saturday in the season-ending EPC tournament.

Woods emerges

Eagles' top scorer

Nick Woods tallied 11 points and dished out seven assists in Wayne Christian's 46-35, non-conference victory over Hobgood Academy at Clifford Gymnasium.

Woods also snagged seven rebounds for the Eagles, who improved to 12-9 overall.

Jordan Yelverton provided eight points and eight rebounds. Teammates Matt Davis and T.A. Brannan added eight and seven points, respectively.

The Eagles travel to Johnston Christian next Tuesday for a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference game.

Katie Daniels delivered a double-double -- 11 points, 10 rebounds -- in Wayne Christian's 47-36, non-conference loss against Hobgood Academy at Clifford Gymnasium.

Brooke Norris added nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and one steal for the Eagles. Michelle Krug provided eight points, two assists and two rebounds.

Wayne Christian (7-14) visits Johnston Christian next Tuesday in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference action.

rallies for victory

Visiting Hobgood Academy seized a nine-point lead in the opening quarter, but Wayne Christian rallied for a 34-30, non-conference victory at Clifford Gymnasium.

Eric Williams collected his 16th consecutive double-double -- 12 points, 12 rebounds -- for the Eagles, who improved to 10-6 overall. Colton Woods chipped in 10 points and Brian Alexander scored seven.

Wayne Christian travels to Johnston Christian next Tuesday for a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference contest.

Kaler, Price

lead Eagles to win

Hanna Kaler scored 10 points and Jennifer Price chipped in seven as Wayne Christian turned back Hobgood Academy 30-18 at Clifford Gymnasium.

Kaler also grabbed three rebounds and picked the Raiders for two steals defensively. Price contributed six rebounds, six steals, two assists and two blocked shots.

Charlie Ipock added three assists and five steals.

Wayne Christian (13-4) is the guest of Johnston Christian next Tuesday.

RHS girls second at

conference title meet

KENLY -- After winning the regular-season title, Rosewood brought home first-place finishes in five events as the Eagles finished second in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference championship meet held at North Johnston.

The Panthers finished with 75 team points, while Rosewood took second with 66. Princeton (32) and Spring Creek (23) rounded out the scoring.

Rosewood's Sa'Coya Cox took first in the shot put (29 feet, 5-1/2 inches) and 300 meters (49.09 seconds), while teammate Sherlita McFall won the long jump (14-5) and 55 meter (7.90).

Stephanie Behrend added a first-place finish in the high jump (4-3) for the Eagles.

Princeton's Heather Braswell paced the Bulldogs with wins in the 100 (4.03) and 3200 (15:37).

Christina Fenwick captured the 55 meter hurdles (10.8) and triple jump (29-88) for Spring Creek.

Middle schools

Greenwood boys 77, Spring Creek 22 -- Danny Smith led five T-Birds in double figures with 16 points. Trey Thornton added 15 and Jamal Barnes chipped in 14. Rasheed Williams and Matthew Houston rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Greenwood (3-9, 1-6 Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II) plays host to Rosewood next Monday afternoon.

Norwayne boys 57, Dillard 55 -- Tyheim Pitt pumped in a team-high 22 points for the Cobras. Connor Narron provided 14 points and Sheperd Whitfield added 11. Dillard's Chris Hutchins grabbed game-high scoring honors with 24 points. Teammates Demetri Irby and Terry Moore contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Norwayne (10-2, 4-2 WCMSAC Division I) visits archrival Eastern Wayne next Monday afternoon.

Greenwood girls 44, Spring Creek 26 -- Sharmori Worrell collected a game-high 20 points and Danielle Daniel added 12 for the unbeaten T-Birds. Greenwood (12-0, 7-0 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Rosewood next Monday afternoon.

Goldsboro girls 32, Rosewood 27 -- Lakiyah Campbell emerged the Cougars' top scorer with 12 points. Zeara McDuffie added nine for Goldsboro, which improved to 8-4 overall and 6-0 against WCMSAC Division II competition. The Cougars visit Grantham next Monday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne boys 70, Mount Olive 33 -- Will White and Johnathan Midgette each posted a double-double for the unbeaten Warriors. White collected 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Midgette provided 11 points and a team-best 13 boards. Jakar Kelly claimed top-scoring honors with 15 points. Landon Case and Hassan Best each dished out eight assists. Eastern Wayne (12-0, 6-0 WCMSAC Division I) entertains Norwayne next Monday afternoon.

Norwayne girls 38, Dillard 14 -- Beth Carter paced the Cobras with 12 points and teammate Nicole Kessler recorded nine. Tiffany Thompson and Akeyanna Whitler led the Tigers with six points apiece. Norwayne (10-2, 4-2 WCMSAC Division I) visits Eastern Wayne next Monday afternoon.
