PIKEVILLE -- Several statistics may tell part of the story of Charles B. Aycock's boys basketball team's 73-60 win over Eastern Wayne at home on Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons leading scorers -- Santavin Poole, Rob Phillips and Lamada Williams -- all stepped up with solid games, the home team won the turnover battle and doubled the Warriors in attempts at the free-throw line.

Aycock coach David West's exaplantion for the win sums it up better than any number.

"There comes a time when you get tired of losing and you want to remember what it feels like to win," he said. "The kids just wanted it."

The win was the Falcons (5-13 overall) first in more than a month and their first in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play as they improved to 1-4 at the close of the first half of the conference schedule.

Poole (24 points), Phillips (22 points) and Williams (15 points) combined for 83 percent of the Falcons scoring and scored 20 of Aycock's 24 points in a fourth quarter that saw their team pull away.

The Warriors (8-10, 1-4), who got as close as 49-44 early in the fourth, never consistently got on track offensively. Darryl Cowan scored 16 points to lead Eastern Wayne, while teammate Floronta Wynn came off the bench to score 13.

"We couldn't get into our offense. We got shots, we just didn't make them," Eastern Wayne boys coach Marvin Bowman said. "They did a good job of extending their defense."

Before one Aycock team picked up a long-awaited "W," the Lady Falcons surged to their 10th victory in 12 games with a 58-36 defeat of the Lady Warriors.

Thanks to some timely baskets from Yasmine Washington, who had a team-best 17, Eastern Wayne stayed close during the early going and pulled within three at 14-11, two minutes into the second quarter.

From there, Aycock (12-6, 4-1) seemed to capitalize on every Warrior miscue and rarely allowed a second-shot -- quickly moving into its offense off defensive rebounds. In a lengthy spurt that stretched through the last six minutes of the second quarter and into the middle stages of the third, the Falcons outscored their rivals 44-18 to put the game out of reach.

Senior point guard Quaneisha Milner, who has scored 47 points the last two games, finished with 17 on Tuesday with five, 3-pointers. Teammate and fellow captain, center Emily Stewart, dropped in 16 points in the paint. Quita Broadie and Chantel Gaines chipped in eight points each.

"We turned up the defensive intensity and went to man-to-man, which seemed to make Eastern Wayne play at a faster pace than they wanted to play," Aycock coach Luke Vail said.."I thought we did an excellent job of getting the ball inside, and Quaneisha (Milner) made some nice shots for us."

Noelle Kelly added seven points for the Warriors (2-16, 1-4), who finished with 24 turnovers.

"Credit C.B. Aycock. Coach Vail has done a great job," Eastern Wayne coach Brent Holland said. " I think we played flat. I don't think we played hard tonight. Our effort wasn't there."

The two teams combined to shoot only 17 free throws as only 15 total fouls were committed in a fast-moving contest.

The first half of the boys game saw periods of sluggish offensive play and hard-nosed defense on both ends.

After trading baskets for most of the first quarter, the two teams went nearly four minutes without a basket in the second. The pace picked up late in the half as Phillips scored on an assist from Williams near the 2:30 mark to give Aycock a 26-21 advantage.

The Warriors countered with a 6-0 spurt in a matter of just one minute to take a 27-26 lead after a basket by Cowan. Despite making just three baskets in the second, the Falcons took a slim, 30-29 margin into the break.

Aycock made two runs in the second half that Eastern Wayne simply didn't answer. Keyed by eight points down low by Poole, the home team went on a 15-4 spurt in the first 5:30 of the third quarter and took a 12-point lead at 45-33.

The Warriors trimmed it down to 49-44 early in the fourth on a lay-up by Lamar Davis, but quickly went cold and the Falcons took advantage of some untimely turnovers by Eastern Wayne.

Poole's 20th point capped a 10-4 run in the middle stages of the fourth to push the lead back up to 13, and the outcome was never again in question.

"They got a little closer, and when that happens you want to kick it up a little bit," West said. "The guys did that. We regained our edge. There was a lot of good mental-work tonight."

Aycock won the overall turnover battlle 17-11 and finished 12-20 from the line compared to 5-10 by the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne takes on another county rival, Southern Wayne, on Friday in New Hope, while the Falcons entertain Wilson Beddingfield.
