EW girls win ECC swimming title

Eastern Wayne's girls swim team captured the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference championhip on Saturday at the Goldsboro Family YMCA pool.
The Lady Warriors, who won five events overall, finished with 85 team points and edged Wilson Hunt (83 points) for the league crown. Charles B. Aycock (53) claimed third, while Southern Wayne (42), Wilson Beddingfield (11) and Kinston (3) rounded out the scoring.
Eastern Wayne's Ashley Robinson took first in the 200 freestyle (2:12.40), 500 freestyle (5:42.14) and participated in winning relay teams in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.
Robinson, Regan and Rachael Stoneburner and Meike Meischner combined to claim the 200 medley relay (2:14.67). Robinston teamed with Regan and Rachael Stoneburner and Melisa Ricker to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:18.62).
Rachael Stoneburner added a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.61.
Aycock's Garrett Forest won the 50 freestyle (:27.72), while teammate Julie Petersen took the 100 backstroke (1:11.89). The Lady Falcons also captured the 200 freestyle relay.
Southern Wayne's highest individual finishers were a pair of third-place times by Heather Edwards in the 100 freestyle (1:11.27) and Jessica Howell in the 500 freestyle (7:25.30).
In the boys meet, Eastern Wayne's Mason Chenier, who won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, was named the oustanding men's swimmer for the conference as the Warriors took second overall with a team score of 79.
Hunt won the boys meet with 102, while Southern Wayne (52) and Aycock (42) finished third and fourth, respectively. Kinston (23) rounded out the scoring.
The Warriors' Xander Robinson posted first-place times in the 200 intermediate (2:17.52) and 500 freestyle (5:33.15), while teammate Melvin Shipman won the 200 freestyle (2:04.53). Robinson and Shipman were also teamed with Chenier and Sam Fornecker to take the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.46).
Southern Wayne's higest boys finisher was Fitch Carrere, who took second in the 100 breastroke (1:20.12). Aycock's Kalvin LeRoy took second in the 200 freestroke (2:16.80).
