Landon Downes and Darryl Cowan finished with a game-high 15 points each for Eastern Wayne, but it wasn't enough as the Warriors fell to visiting Kinston on Friday night 78-63.

Miguel Starkey and Jamar Caraway scored 13 points apiece for the Vikings, who remained undefeated in conference play. Quinton Coples added 12 points for the Kinston, which improved to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference with the triumph.

D'Adrian Worrell finished with nine point, while Lamar Davis had eight for the Warriors, who fell to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the ECC with the loss.

"They're a very physical team -- they beat us on the boards tonight," Eastern Wayne coach Marvin Bowman said. "Our kids came out and played with a lot of intensity early, but they wore us down a little.

"They're an outstanding team."

Kinston dominated in the paint and turned Eastern Wayne turnovers into easy transition buckets as the Vikes led by nine after one quarter and expanded their lead to 37-22 at the half.

"I think 85 percent of our baskets in the first half came inside," Kinston coach Wells Gulledge said. "We were able to get dribble penetration inside and were able to finish."

The Vikings expanded their lead to 20 less than three minutes into the third quarter. Downes -- who along with Cowan had three 3-pointers each during the game -- drained a trifecta with 18 seconds left in the period to cap a 15-8 run that cut Kinston's lead to 13 going into the fourth quarter, but the home team would get no closer.

In the girls game, Eastern Wayne picked up its first conference win of the year as the Lady Warriors (2-14, 1-3 ECC) grabbed a 48-39 win over Kinston.

The Lady Vikings fell to 4-11 (0-4 ECC) with the setback.

Yasmine Washington scored a game-high 17 points and teammate Noelle Kelly added 16 for Eastern Wayne, which led 25-13 at the half.

Courtney Smith scored nine points to lead Kinston.

"We're extremely happy to get a conference win," Eastern Wayne coach Brent Holland said. "We've practiced and played hard all year, but the execution was not there. Tonight, it was."

Eastern Wayne travels to play Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.
