King Pin Scratch tournament starts Saturday

Many of the top bowlers from all over the eastern half of the country will be in Goldsboro this weekend.

More than 250 participants will be competing for the top prize of $5,000 at the inaugural King Pin Scratch Open at AMF Boulevard Lanes on Saturday and Sunday, tournament director Clarke Hill said.

The tournament begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Final 16 hitting the lanes at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

"We've got bowlers coming from New York, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia -- everywhere," Hill said. "The total purse will be based on the number of total entries, but I'd say it will be around $15,000."

Each bowler pays an entry fee of $100, and will bowl best-of-five games in a single-elimination format. Once there are only four bowlers left, they bowl one game head-to-head with the top two left battling for the top prize.

During the tournament, any bowler who rolls a 300 game will get a $50 bonus.

"It's going to be a tough competition," Hill said. "I'd say a quarter of the field are regular PBA bowlers on a regional circuit.

"This is going to be the biggest single bowling tournament ever in this region."

The King Pin Scratch Open is open to the public, and Hill said another tournament may be held this summer.

"We may do another one this year depending on how successful it is," he said. "So far, it's looking like it's going to be very successful."
