SW wins seventh straight

TEACHEY -- Southern Wayne's Akeem Royal poured in a game-best 38 points, including 28 in the first half, as the Saints tallied an 88-75 win at Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday.

The win was Southern Wayne's seventh in a row as it improved to 10-1 heading into Friday's Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener at home against Eastern Wayne. The Bulldogs slipped to 6-2.

Royal and teammate Delawn Armwood, who posted 25 points, combined for all 14 of the Saints' 3-pointers as Royal made eight and Armwood knocked down six. Both were especially hot from long range late in the first half and during another run in the fourth quarter.

Cory Rhodik led Wallace-Rose Hill with 19 points, while Michael Evans added 16 and Jale Peterson chipped in 13.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Dalreese Bell had 18 points in the Gators' 80-61 loss at home to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Josh Wright added 17 points for Spring Creek (4-10, 1-0 Carolina), while Cliff Wilson chipped in nine points.

Ayden-Grifton's Jaquan Nobles posted a game-best 27 points as Tanner Carnes (18 points) and Leon Maye (11 points) also reached double figures. The Chargers (1-0 Carolina) improved to 4-6 overall.

The Gators will look to snap a nine-game losing streak at Princeton on Friday.

Rebels suffer

home loss

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Doug Lloyd scored eight points as the Rebels reached double digits in only one quarter in a 63-25 loss at home to Union.

North Duplin (0-5) fell behind 27-15 at the break, before scoring just 10 points after intermission.

Zach Honeycutt led the Spartans with 13 points, while teammate Tobias Adams chipped in 12 in Union's balanced effort.

The Rebels open Class 1-A Carolina Conference play at home against North Johnston.

TEACHEY -- Southern Wayne's Paris Armwood scored 20 points as the Saints defeated Wallace-Rose Hill 68-55 in double overtime on Wednesday.

Emmanuel Hinton added 14 points for Southern Wayne (4-4).

The Saints return to action on Friday at home against Eastern Wayne in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

TEACHEY -- In their first game since Dec. 18, Southern Wayne defeated Wallace-Rose Hill, 56-37 in Duplin County on Wednesday.

Freshman Lynnesha Leonard led the way with 23 points, nine rebounds and five steals, while teammate Ebony Darden posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Shakoria Clark added seven points, 12 rebounds and five assists as Christy Dixon also chipped in seven points. Lynn Grantham added to the balanced effort with five points and five steals.

The Saints (3-5) return to action on Friday at home against Eastern Wayne in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

PRINCETON -- Goldsboro's LaQuita Holmes scored 10 points to lead the Lady Cougars in a 38-29 win at Princeton on Wednesday.

Goldsboro improved to 2-9 on the season, while the Lady Bulldogs slipped to 5-5.

Kierra Rogers and Kim Butler added seven points each for the Lady Cougars.
