Lady Trojans play at VSU this evening

PETERSBURG, Va. -- The fall semester may be over, but Christmas break hasn't started yet for the Mount Olive College women's basketball team as the Trojans play at Virginia State in a non-conference match-up tonight. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.

Mount Olive (6-1) is coming off a 78-64 win at home last Wednesday against St. Andrews as the Trojans improved to 2-1 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play. Senior forward Teneal Boone matched a career-high with 26 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to post her fourth double-double of the season.

Boone is averaging a double-double with 18.4 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Boone, who recorded a career-high six blocked shots against Chowan two weeks ago, is averaging 1.5 blocks per game. She is also shooting 53.3 percent from the field.

With a roster that includes seven freshmen and two junior college transfers, the Trojans are off to their best start since reclassifying to NCAA Division II 10 years ago. Newcomers have played a role in the team's early success.

Junior forward Ebony Green, a transfer from Lenoir Community College, is averaging 10.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She narrowly missed her first double-double last week, tallying 17 points and eight rebounds against St. Andrews.

Freshman swing player Tomeka Prichard scored a career-high 14 points against St. Andrews and has reached double figures in each of her last two conference games. Prichard leads the Trojans with six three-pointers.

Prichard was the hero in Mount Olive's first meeting against Virginia State, hitting an off-balance baseline jumper with 6.3 seconds to lift the Trojans to a 66-65 victory Nov. 22 at Kornegay Arena. Freshman forward Alisa Jones scored a career-high 17 points in the win. Boone pulled down 10 rebounds, but was held below double figures for the only time this season.

Virginia State (0-8) is still seeking its first win of the season after a 63-50 loss at Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday. VSU's record may be deceptive, as four of its losses were decided by four points or less, including two in overtime.

Tonight's contest is the first of three games for the women's basketball team during the holiday break as the Trojans have a pair of afternoon home games over New Year's weekend. Mount Olive plays host to North Carolina Central on Dec. 30, then hosts Presbyterian on Jan. 2. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena for both games.
