MOC men's soccer players earn CVAC accolades

Reid Clewis and Brandon Mills earned first-team honors, Chris Roush was named to the second team and Chris Jasso earned honorable mention as Mount Olive placed four players on the 2005 All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Soccer Team.

Clewis, a senior forward from Wilmington, N.C. (New Hanover HS), is tied for second in the CVAC with 10 goals. A two-time CVAC Player of the Week this season, Clewis opened the season with a goal in each of the Trojans' first five matches in 2005. Clewis was a second team selection in 2004.

Mills, a junior defender from Swansboro, N.C. (Swansboro HS), moved to sweeper this year after playing outside back in his first two seasons. Mills, who earned CVAC Player of the Week honors during the season, helped lead the Trojans to seven shutouts and the second-lowest goals against average in the conference.

Roush, a sophomore goalkeeper from Hubert, N.C. (Swansboro HS), ranks second in the CVAC with a 0.94 goals against average. Roush helped limit 11 of 19 opponents to one goal or less. An All-CVAC honorable mention last season, Roush was named Most Valuable Player of the 2004 CVAC Men's Soccer Tournament.

Jasso, a junior midfielder from Winston-Salem, N.C. (East Forsyth HS), was one of four Trojans to start all 19 matches this season. Jasso finished with one goal and three assists this season. Jasso earned All-Tournament honors at the 2004 CVAC Tournament.

Mount Olive posted an 11-6-2 record in 2005 and tied for third in the CVAC standings with a 6-3-1 mark. The Trojans fell to Pfeiffer in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 CVAC Tournament.

opens with win

APEX -- Matt Davis pumped in a team-high 15 points in Wayne Christian's season-opening 50-46 victory over Cary Christian on Tuesday evening.

Tyler Brannan provided 13 points and eight rebounds in the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference opener for both teams. Nick Woods dished out six assists and pulled down five rebounds.

The Eagles (1-0) return to action Thursday at county rival Wayne Country Day. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m.

Goldsboro High School will have pre-sale tickets available for Friday night's Class 2-A (small school) N.C. High School Athletic Association first-round playoff game with Whiteville in the main office from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday only. Pre-sale price is $5. Tickets will be $6 at the gate on Friday.

Hole-in-one

Irvin Hales used a pitching wedge to card an ace on the par-3, No. 16 hole at Sleepy Creek Golf Course.

Playing partners Freddie Adams, Larry Barbour and Jimmy Byrd witnessed Hales' feat.
