Trojans fall to UNCW in exhibition tilt

WILMINGTON -- UNC Wilmington shot 60 percent to build a 17-point lead in the first half and cruised to a 103-58 victory over Mount Olive in a college men's basketball exhibition Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks, who won their 13th straight exhibition contest, wrap up their preseason slate with another NCAA Division II opponent, Armstrong Atlantic, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The 103-point total was the highest for the Seahawks since a 100-97 triple overtime victory over George Mason in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament on Mar. 5, 1994.

The Trojans, picked to win the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference title this season, dropped their third straight exhibition tilt to the Seahawks and visit N.C. State on Friday in another exhibition game.

Junior point guard Temi Soyebo's 18 points led five players in double figures for UNCW, which wound up shooting 64.7 percent from the floor for the game. Sophomore guard Daniel Fountain finished with 17 points, including 13 after the break, while senior guard John Goldsberry added 16 points. Senior forward Beckham Wyrick and sophomore center Todd Hendley poured in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Goldsberry and Soyebo combined for 12 assists and just two turnovers.

The Trojans were led by guard Maurice Holton's 15 points while senior guard Victor Young had 13. Preseason Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Player of the Year Elton Coffield added 10 points on 2-of-9 shooting from the floor. Mount Olive committed 23 turnovers.

Goldsberry, a Colonial Athletic Association first-teamer last season, got the Seahawks untracked early. After a pair of free throws by Hendley gave the Seahawks the lead for good, 9-7, with 15:53 left in the first half, Goldsberry drained a 3-pointer and UNCW outscored Mount Olive, 15-6, over the next seven minutes to take control.
