MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive women's volleyball player Sam Mitchell has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Mitchell won or shared team-high honors in kills in both of the Trojans' wins last week.

Mitchell, a 5-8 sophomore outside hitter from Boyd, Wis., recorded 21 kills and 13 digs in Mount Olive's five-game win over conference leader and regionally seventh-ranked Lees-McRae. Mitchell recorded the winning kill on match point in the Trojans' 15-13 win in game five after Lees-McRae had fought off two match points. The win moved the Trojans within a game of Lees-McRae, which had entered the match unbeaten in conference play.

The double-double was Mitchell's third in as many matches, all against regionally-ranked teams. Her 21 kills were two shy of her career best of 23, set three days earlier against regionally ninth-ranked West Chester (Pa.).

Mitchell capped her week with 18 kills in Mount Olive's 3-0 win over Belmont Abbey. Mitchell tallied five of her kills during a 7-1 run in game one.

Mount Olive is ranked No. 8 in the NCAA II Atlantic Region. The Trojans have an overall record of 19-6 and are in second place in the CVAC standings with a 12-1 mark.

Mount Olive has five conference matches in a span of six days this week, starting with Tuesday's match at Barton. The Trojans are back in action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as Mount Olive plays host to Coker at Kornegay Arena. The Trojans spend the weekend on the road, playing at Queens on Friday, Limestone on Saturday and Belmont Abbey on Sunday.

Clewis named

Player of the Week

Mount Olive soccer player Reid Clewis has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. The award is Clewis' second this season and third of his career.

Clewis, a senior forward from Wilmington, N.C. (New Hanover HS), scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in the 38th minute of Mount Olive's 3-1 conference victory over St. Andrews. He also assisted on an insurance goal late in the second half as the Trojans' pulled away from a one-goal lead.

Against Lees-McRae, Clewis broke a scoreless tie on a header with 51 seconds left in regulation. The match ended in a 1-1 tie after a direct kick by Lees-McRae 22 seconds later, but the result moved Mount Olive into a tie for second place in the CVAC standings.

Clewis was named Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 5-11. He also earned Player of the Week honors during the 2004 season.

A 2004 All-CVAC Second Team selection, Clewis is second in the conference with eight goals and tied for third with 18 points.

Mount Olive concludes its regular season Saturday as the Trojans head to Wilson, N.C., to take on Barton in a CVAC matchup. Match time is 3 p.m.
