Lawrence earns MVP honors; Warriors gain ECC sweep

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne senior Michael Lawrence seized Most Valuable Player honors, and the Warriors swept the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference cross-country championships contested Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Hunt.

Lawrence ran the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 22 seconds as the Warrior boys edged county archrival Charles B. Aycock 36-44. Senior Joey Burridge complemented Lawrence's performance with a third-place effort 19:22. Teammate Paul Wruck emerged the next-highest finisher with an eighth-place time of 19:53.

Dalton Denning and Daniel Pennington finished fourth and sixth, respectively, for the Golden Falcons. Teammate Alan Toler ended up ninth in 20:01.

Southern Wayne's Allen Bennett emerged second overall in 19:10. The Saints were fourth as a team with 102 points, while Hunt (79) was third and Wilson Beddingfield took fifth.

Eastern Wayne's Helen Baddour, Natalie Taylor and Lyddia Hirschy each recorded a top-six time in the girls' portion of the meet. The trio helped the Warriors slip past Hunt 38-42, while Aycock took third with 43 points.

Baddour grabbed second overall in 22:42, while Taylor was third in 22:50. Hirschy turned in a time of 23:17.

Megan Hales and Finland native Rebekka Katko registered fourth- and fifth-place times, respectively, for Aycock. Teammate Danielle Sealy ended up eighth in 24:16.

The top eight finishers, boys and girls, received all-conference honors.

The teams run again Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regionals at Red Oak Middle School in Nashville.

collects hat trick

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jose Ramirez notched a hat trick (three goals) as Spring Creek cruised past Ayden-Grifton 6-2 in a Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference match Tuesday evening. Ramirez scored in the eighth, 61st and 63rd minutes. Mario Valesquez provided two goals and Darwin Aldana added one.

David Ramirez tallied both goals for the Chargers.

Spring Creek (5-5-1, 4-4 C/T-RC) entertains Hobbton today. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Pender knocks

off Princeton

BURGAW -- Stephanie Daughtry recorded a double-double -- 11 kills, 11 digs -- in Princeton's 25-9, 25-10, 25-21 loss against Pender in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs finished 8-9 overall.

Sarah Gibbs added four kills and two blocks. Kaitlyn Haddock contributed two kills, two digs and one block.

Setters Brittany Davis and Brittany Rose combined for 18 assists.

"I am very proud of the way the team came back in the third game and fought hard," said Bulldogs coach Trudy Rast. "We got off to a slow start during the first two games, but really worked well together during the third. We covered the court well, set the ball up and worked kills.

"Pender is a very good team. They have great court coverage and excellent hitters."

Haddock, Rose, Mandy Wellons, Kristen Parker and Jenny Wallace -- all seniors -- played their final game for Princeton.

Greene Central

blitzes Reidsville

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central continued its march toward another eastern regional title with a 6-0 conquest of Reidsville in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams (22-1) entertain either West Stokes or Cardinal Gibbons next Tuesday at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex. Match time is 4 p.m.

"Reidsville had a very solid team," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "They are very young, without a senior in the lineup, but they played sound, fundamental tennis. We didn't have much emotion again today, but we did a good job of handling the windy conditions on what was a very raw day for tennis."

Top-seeded Meredith Rouse, Christi Murphy, Ashley Harrell, Michelle Jernigan, Brittany Horton and Elizabeth Cooper each claimed a straight-set singles win for Greene Central. Horton posted a shutout at No. 5, while Harrell and Cooper each lost just one game.

"Elizabeth played an outstanding match for us today," said Clark. "She hit the ball with a lot of confidence. I was pleased with the patience she displayed early in the match."

David Burke and Travis Musselman each collected one goal. Ruffin, Burke, Blake Vail, Bryce Creger and Ryan Bunn combined for six assists. Norwayne (7-0-1) travels to Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Eastern Wayne soccer 6, Spring Creek 0 -- Eric Suncin had two goals for the Warriors. Leslie Cox, Jose Ponce, Sang Kim and Nick Bowden each scored one goal. Bowden, Grace Russo, Brian Sanchez and Landon Case combined for five assists. Eastern Wayne (9-0-1) entertains Norwayne on Thursday. Spring Creek departed 2-7-1.
