Rosewood falls on the road, 28-6

LITTLEFIELD -- Ayden-Grifton raced out to a four-touchdown lead during the first half, and the Chargers forced Rosewood into a total of five turnovers during a 28-6 victory in the first Class 1-A Carolina Conference game for both teams on Monday night.

Ayden-Grifton improved to 6-1 overall, while the Eagles fell to 1-5.

The Chargers' Daniel Greene reached the end zone four times in the first half as explosive plays helped Ayden-Grifton surge out to an early lead.

Marcus Moore returned the opening kickoff 69 yards to set up Greene's 11-yard touchdown run.

After the first of Rosewood's turnovers, Greene took a pass from Richie Turner over the middle, zig-zagged in between three Eagles' defenders en route to a 93-yard TD reception.

Greene caught another Turner pass from a touchdown and made a cutback run almost the width of the field for the last of his scores to push Ayden-Grifton ahead 28-0 with 1:43 left in the first half.

Rosewood never folded the tent despite the score. The Eagles kept pounding at the Chargers with an offense Cornwell called "so unorthodox that you don't see anyone else do what they do."

The Eagles had four different ball carriers gain at least 43 yards on at least 10 rushes. Rosewood eventually scored via a 19-yard run by Josh Myers on the second play of the fourth quarter.

The Eagles might have had more points had it not been for three interceptions.

"We're maturing as a football team," Rosewood coach Daniel Barrow said. "We don't have many senior starter types. They're good boys who work hard in practice. The character they have comes out in the fight on the field.

"They're not ever going to give up."

Ayden-Grifton travels to Spring Creek on Friday, while Rosewood hosts unbeaten North Johnston.
