Aycock tennis team slips past Warriors

PIKEVILLE -- Minus its top singles player, Charles B. Aycock escaped Wilson Hunt 5-3 in an exciting Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference contest Thursday afternoon.

The top-seeded tandem of Carlyn Claiborne-Laine Purcell rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Warriors' Andrea Michalak-Anna Strader 8-6. Teammates Nicole Taylor-Lizzie Sodoma, the No. 2 seed, trailed 5-4 before stopping Rainey Wallace-Madison Cauley 8-6.

"Both doubles teams were outstanding on the big points," said Aycock coach Luke Vail, whose team extended its 27-year, conference-match win streak to 290.

"Our players really stepped up big under adverse conditions ... entire lineup moved up one position against a talented Hunt team. I was proud of our effort, hustle and enthusiasm."

Raychel Batts, the reigning eastern regional singles champion, missed the match due to sickness.

Taylor won her third, third-set tiebreaker of the season in a 6-1, 5-7, 7-0 conquest of Strader at the No. 2 spot. Aycock also received singles wins from Sodoma and sixth-seeded Katie Perry.

"Nicole showed good, mental toughness," said Vail. "Lizzie did a great job in both singles and doubles. Our team displayed character, heart and determination because Hunt played very well in both singles and doubles.

"It was an exciting match to the very end."

C.B. Aycock (14-1, 8-0 ECC) is the guest of Eastern Wayne next Tuesday afternoon. Match time is 4 p.m. at Wayne Community College.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek prevailed in five of six singles matches and knocked off Ayden-Grifton 8-1 in a Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference match Thursday afternoon.

Stacy Smith, Kaitlin Murphy, Jamie Johnson, Heather Price and Ivey Best each claimed a straight-set singles win. Best survived a first-set tiebreaker in a 7-6 (5), 6-2 decision against the Chargers' Veronica Jackson.

Smith-Murphy, Johnson-Price and Best-Jessica Foley led a Gator sweep in doubles.

Spring Creek (5-6, 5-4 C/SS) entertains Wallace-Rose Hill next Tuesday afternoon. The teams will also complete a suspended match that was tied 3-3 with all three doubles matches in progress.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central moved within two victories of clinching another Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season title after its 9-0 victory over Goldsboro on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams (17-1, 8-0 EPC) can clinch a share of the championship next Thursday afternoon at Farmville Central. They face their toughest league foe, Tarboro High, on the road next Tuesday.

Meredith Rouse, Christi Murphy, Ashley Harrell, Michelle Jernigan and Brittany Horton each posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in singles action. Elizabeth Cooper earned a default.

Jernigan-Cooper prevailed 8-0 in the lone doubles match.

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne continued its most-successful season in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with a doubleheader sweep, 6-0 and 9-0, over Kinston at Bill Fay Park on Thursday afternoon.

Beth Brown, Tara Hirsch, Casey Powell, Katlyn Thornton and Whitli Thornton each finished the day 2-0. Christy Westbrook and Tara Tillman each earned a singles victory, also.

Hirsch-Taylor, Powell-Westbrook and Katlyn Thornton-Leslie Barrow each triumphed in doubles.

Southern Wayne (8-5, 4-4 ECC) entertains Wilson Hunt next Tuesday afternoon. Match time is 4 p.m. at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center at Mount Olive College.

drops league match

KENLY -- Senior middle hitter Sierra Ward pounded out a team-high 18 kills in North Duplin's 13-25, 25-13, 24-26, 21-25 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston on Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels (6-4, 3-3 CC) suffered their third consecutive league defeat.

"It's disappointing, but we'll get back into the winning bracket," said North Duplin coach Heather Best.

Ward added six digs, four blocks and one assist in the four-set affair. Heather Hudson contributed six kills, six digs, two blocks and two aces.

Brittany Carr provided five aces, while Julie Ivey contributed four.

North Duplin travels to Princeton next Tuesday.

Princeton eases

past Union

PRINCETON -- Brittany Davis and Brittany Rose combined for 16 assists in Princeton's 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23 non-conference victory over Union on Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-5.

Stephanie Daughtry collected five kills, six digs and one block. Kaitlyn Haddock contributed four kills, seven digs and two blocks.

Davis had 11 digs defensively.

"I was very proud of the way our team came out strong tonight after our loss at Rosewood," said Bulldogs coach Trudy Rast. "We came into the game ready to play and focused. We talked and were covering the court, moving after every ball."

Hawks endure

EPC 2-A defeat

FARMVILLE CENTRAL -- Outside hitter Brittany Sanders delivered a team-high eight kills in North Lenoir's 19-25, 21-25, 17-25 loss Thursday afternoon at Eastern Plains 2-A rival Farmville Central.

Anna Kennedy chipped in four kills for the Hawks, who slipped to 2-4 in the league and 4-11 overall.

Connor Jordan finished the match 18-for-18 at the service line. Kayla Sutton ended the day 11-for-12 at the service line to go along with two kills and three blocks.

North Lenoir entertains Rosewood next Monday afternoon. Game time is 5 p.m. at Wooten Gymnasium.

perfect on season

KENLY -- North Duplin swept North Johnston 25-14, 25-11 in their Carolina 1-A Conference battle Thursday afternoon and remained unbeaten in nine outings.

The Rebels got a balanced effort from several players -- Kayla Myers, Heather Hudson, Jessica Pridgen, Erica Lane, Julie Ivey, Katie Swanzey and Sam Cates.

Lane and Hudson each had two kills.

Myers, Ivey, Cates, Hudson and Lane each served two aces.

North Duplin (9-0, 5-0 CC) visits Princeton next Tuesday afternoon.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek remained winless in Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference play after a 6-0 loss Wednesday evening to North Johnston.

The Panthers collected three goals in a six-minute stretch en route to their 10th win in 13 outings.

Spring Creek led 13-10 in shots on goal.

The Gators (1-3-1, 0-2 C/T-RC) play host to Rosewood next Monday evening.

Eagles nab

non-league win

Trey Kriger and Goss Kendall each tallied a pair of goals in a 4-0 victory over Hobbton at Branch Pope Field on Wednesday evening.

Kriger scored in the 20th and 45th minutes.

Kendall collected his goals in the 75th and 77th minutes. Connor Adams and Will Smith each earned an assist on Kendall's marks.

Rosewood (4-5) is the guest of Spring Creek next Monday evening.

In a two-team meet at Wayne Christian School, the Eagles' Doug Johnson (20:09) won the boys meet, while Goldsboro's Danielle Irby (24:11) claimed the girls meet.

Donald Irby (22:51), Joseph Houpe (23:44) and Kendran Coleman (26:10) finished in the top nine for the Cougar boys. Justin Braithwaite (23:02), Jon Massey (23:13), Travis Thomas (23:31), Aaron Summerville (26:44) and Hunter Dentzer (30:11) joined Johnson in the top nine for Wayne Christian.

Angel Roberts (27:33) and Ashley Thompson (32:38) joined Danielle Irby in the top eight.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Eric Walters emerged with a first-place time of 19:51 as the Gators emerged with 33 team points to claim a Class 1-A Carolina Conference meet at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park on Wednesday.

The Gators also got top-ten finishes from Alex Casey (20:25), Daniel Carrell (21:21) and Pat Wilkens (21:57).

North Johnston finished second in the meet with 56, while North Duplin (67) and Princeton (72) rounded out the team scoring. The Bulldogs' Phillip Croom took third at 20:50 as temmate Chris Langden claimed eighth at 21:39.

The Rebels got a fifth-place finish from Michael Mattas (21:03.

In the girls meet, Princeton finished first at 25, while North Johnston finished second at 31. Neither Rosewood, Spring Creek or North Duplin had the minimum, five runners to qualify for team scoring.

Heather Braswell (24:12), Courtney Yancey (25:27), Olivia Booker (25:29) and Magen Hewett (25:38) finished in spots two-through-five, respectively for the Bulldogs.

Rosewood's Mary Jo Moore finished ninth with a 26:58. North Johnston's Elizabeth Baker won the girls meet with a 22:52.

Farmville Central claimed the boys meet 21-39. The Jaguars' girls finished with 20 team points as the Rams did not have the minimum, five runners to garner a team score.

Greene Central (2-4, 0-2 EPC) got top-ten finishes from Tony Tyson (18:55), Lance Murray (19:47) and Cameron Taylor (21:12).

Farmville's Brandon Cox won the boys meet with an 18:01.

The Lady Rams' Blair Carraway (25:40) and Ashley Oakes (25:42) were the lone top ten finishers for Greene Central (0-3, 0-2 EPC), while Brittney Stanford won the meet for Farmville with a 24:07.

Chargers compete

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day's Molly Peacock claimed a third-place finish with a time of 26:36, while teammates Anna Davis (32:16) and Virginia Yarboro (43:14) finished 13th and 20th, respectively in a four-team meet at Rocky Mount Academy.

Rocky Mount Prep, Kerr-Vance and Flora MacDonald also competed in the event.

Middle schools

Norwayne volleyball d. Dillard 25-26, 25-6, 25-7 -- Jessica Hare, Cara Frederick and Ashley Shingleton emerged the serve leaders for Norwayne. The Cobras (6-0) travel to Rosewood next Thursday afternoon.

Goldsboro football 30, Rosewood 14 -- Teonis Cox accounted for three touchdowns -- one rushing and two receiving -- in Thursday afternoon's win. Deonta Linder added a 55-yard touchdown run and paced the defense with seven tackles.

Greenwood football 38, Spring Creek 16 -- Danny Smith rushed for one touchdown and caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Houston for the unbeaten T-Birds. Houston also threw a 71-yard scoring strike to Tre Thornton. Chris Barfield and Houston each contributed a rushing touchdown. Defensive standouts were Jacob Marple (fumble recovery) and Rashid Williams. Greenwood (3-0) entertains Dillard next Thursday afternoon, while Spring Creek travels to Grantham.
