MOC teams ready for the weekend

For Mount Olive head men's soccer coach Jerry Riggs, the remainder of the schedule is not a matter of conference matches or non-conference matches. From here on out, every match is a regional match.

Mount Olive tries to rebound from its first loss of the season as the nationally seventh-ranked Trojans play host to Anderson in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer Saturday at Trojan Field. Match time is 3 p.m.

Mount Olive (8-1-1 overall, 4-0-0 CVAC) is coming off a 1-0 loss Wednesday at UNC Pembroke. Not only was the match the Trojans' first loss of the season, it marked the first time Mount Olive had trailed in any match this year.

Mount Olive, which began the week ranked second in the nation in scoring offense with 3.89 goals per game, hopes to get its office back on track. After an eight-goal performance against Pfeiffer September 21, the Trojans have been limited to one goal in their last two matches.

Forwards Reid Clewis and Woody Stilley are among the CVAC leaders with seven goals apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Roush began the week ranked eighth in the nation with a 0.57 goals against average. Roush is credited with four of the Trojans' six shutouts this season.

Anderson (5-5-0, 3-1-0) is ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region.

Women's soccer

The Mount Olive women's soccer team might not be on pace for a second consecutive 20-win season, but the Trojans are still on pace to equal or surpass their record in conference play.

Mount Olive tries to stay among the conference leaders as the Trojans play host to Anderson in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer Saturday at Trojan Field. Match time is 1 p.m. Mount Olive (6-5-0 overall, 4-1-0 CVAC) is coming off a 2-1 loss Tuesday against regionally seventh-ranked Wingate. Sophomore Gina Dos Santos, who last week became the Trojans' career goal-scoring leader, has 11 goals this season and is tied for 19th in the nation in goals per game.

Volleyball

The Mount Olive volleyball team puts its nine-match winning streak on the line as the Trojans spend this weekend in Wheeling, W. Va., to compete in the Wheeling Jesuit University Volleyball Tournament.

The Trojans (10-2 overall, 8-0 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference) face California (Pa.) today at 5 p.m., then take on Wheeling Jesuit at 7 p.m. Saturday, Mount Olive takes on Fairmont State at 10 a.m. and wrap up play at noon against Alderson-Broaddus.
