Three golfers in the top eight

Mount Olive placed three golfers in the top eight as the Trojans went on to take home first place at the St. Andrews Men's Golf Fall Invitational. Mount Olive shot a team score of 307 in Tuesday's second round and finished with a 606, five strokes ahead of host St. Andrews.

Brandon Barfield, who was in second place after Monday's first round, finished third out of 33 golfers with a 72-77--149. Chris Bitzenhofer tied for sixth with a 74-78--152, while Jonathan Greene placed eighth with a 76-77--153.

Mick Moberg tied for 14th with an 82-75--157 and Will Williams finished 17th at 77-81--158.

John Kolls of St. Andrews won the individual title with a 68-71--139.

Mount Olive is back in action next Monday and Tuesday in the Barton College Invitational at Wilson, N.C.

* Lindsey Snyder placed sixth out of 28 golfers and Kate Somek finished ninth to lead Mount Olive to a third-place finish at the St. Andrews Women's Golf Fall Invitational. Limestone edged USC-Upstate by one stroke to win the six-team tournament.

Snyder shot an 86-82--168, while Somek carded an 85-88--173. Deborah Woodrum tied for 13th with an 88-92--180, Kristen Freeman finished 18th with a 98-89--187 and Brianna Whatley placed 27th with a 117-107--224.

Mount Olive shot a team score of 708.

Trisha Randall of USC-Upstate won the individual title with a 77-80--157.

Mount Olive is off until Oct. 10 when the Trojans compete in the Lenoir-Rhyne College/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.

Men's soccer team jumps to Number Seven

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive earned its first-ever men's soccer top 10 national ranking, jumping six places to No. 7 in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Division II Men's Soccer Top 25, it was announced Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Trojans also moved up to No. 1 in this week's Southeast Regional poll.

Mount Olive improved to 8-0-1 last week and extended its unbeaten streak to 12 with a pair of Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference wins. The Trojans defeated then-regionally seventh-ranked Pfeiffer 8-0 and closed the week with a 1-0 win at Coker.

The Trojans debuted at No. 22 in the national poll three weeks ago for their first-ever national ranking and spent the previous two weeks at No. 13. Men's soccer becomes the second team in Mount Olive athletics history to earn a top 10 national ranking. Baseball was ranked as high as No. 3 in 2000.

"This is a great honor and a great opportunity for the school and the men's soccer program," said fourth-year head coach Jerry Riggs. "It's very exciting and we appreciate the recognition, but we also have to remind ourselves that it's just a number and that we still have to show up every match. We have a very tough schedule ahead, including a huge match tomorrow (at UNC Pembroke)."

Mount Olive returns to action today as the Trojans travel to nationally 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke for a match that will likely have regional and national implications. UNCP, which reached the national semifinals of last year's NCAA II Men's Soccer Championship, is one of four teams tied at No. 2 in the Southeast Region. Match time is 7 p.m. at Pembroke, N.C.

Dos Santos named

Player of the Week

Mount Olive College women's soccer player Gina Dos Santos has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Dos Santos became Trojan women's soccer all-time career goal scorer.

Dos Santos, a sophomore from Whitehall, Pa., scored three goals last week to help lead Mount Olive to a pair of conference wins. She scored a goal in the Trojans' 3-0 win over then-regionally 10th-ranked Pfeiffer, then added two goals in Mount Olive's 5-0 win at Coker.

After scoring 20 goals last season as a freshman, Dos Santos upped her season total to 11 to give her 31 goals for her career. Her first goal against Coker tied the school career mark of 30 and her second goal was the record breaker.

Dos Santos leads the CVAC in goals and points. Her four-goal performance in the Trojans' season opener against North Greenville is tied for the second-highest single-match goal-scoring total in Division II this season.

Mount Olive entered this week with a record of 6-4-0 overall and is in a four-way tie for first in the CVAC points standings with a 4-1-0 mark. The Trojans played host to Wingate Tuesday in a non-conference match-up.

Mount Olive plays host to Anderson Saturday in CVAC action. Match time is 1 p.m. at Trojan Field.
