Wingate slips by Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE -- Kate Painter's goal in the 72nd minute pulled Mount Olive within one, but it wasn't enough as regionally seventh-ranked Wingate held on for a 2-1 win over the Trojans in NCAA II non-conference women's soccer Tuesday at Trojan Field. Caroline Harvischak and Kelly Mottola scored Wingate's goals, both in the second half.

Mount Olive (6-5-0) withstood a number of attacks late in the first half to keep the match scoreless at halftime. Trojan goalkeeper Heather Ulep came off her line to blocked Becky Noonan's shot from just inside the box in the 43rd minute to keep Wingate off the board.

Wingate (7-3-0) broke the deadlock 11 minutes into the second half after the Bulldogs made a steal at midfield and Laura Van Leer found Harvischak, who lofted a shot from the top of the box that went just off Ulep's fingertips and into the goal. Wingate nearly scored less than a minute later when Lisa Service's shot hit the right post. Wingate eventually extended the lead to 2-0 at the 71:14 mark as Megan Smith's through ball found Mottola for an open shot.

Mount Olive struck back 42 seconds later as April Jacobs served to Painter, who dribbled from left of the box and scored far post to cut Wingate's lead in half. The Trojans pressured Wingate in the final minutes, but goalkeeper Kathryn Smith stopped Mount Olive's best chance, capturing the ball in the 84th minutes after Painter flicked the ball into the box.

Ulep finished with five saves for Mount Olive, while Smith recorded two saves. Wingate outshot the Trojans 14-7. The loss snaps Mount Olive's two-match winning streak, as well as a streak of more than 235 shutout minutes by the Trojans' defense.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Anderson in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference match-up. Match time is 1 p.m. at Trojan Field. Wingate travels to regionally fifth-ranked Catawba Saturday at 7 p.m. in South Atlantic Conference action.
