Greg Thomas -- a Charles B. Aycock graduate and a former East Carolina football player -- has been selected to coach the East squad in the 58th Annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Football game, which will take place on July 19, 2006 in Jamieson Stadium on Greensboro Grimsley High School campus.

Thomas is currently the head football coach at J.H. Rose, and has won back-to-back Class 4-A state titles.

In 2005, the West recorded the second-largest blowout in the game's history, beating the East 40-0 on July 20.

At Aycock, Thomas played football and baseball and went on to star as a offensive center and guard at ECU from 1983-86. The three-year starter was selected as the Pirates' Most Valuable Offensive lineman in 1985 and '86, and was a team captain as a senior.

N. Duplin-Dixon

moved to Saturday

HOLLY RIDGE -- North Duplin athletics director Ken Avent Sr. announced Wednesday that the Rebels' non-conference varsity football game at Dixon has been moved to Saturday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Rain and gusty winds from Hurricane Ophelia forced an evacuation of the Holly Ridge area before the storm made landfall sometime Wednesday in Onslow County.

North Duplin and Dixon each carry 0-2 marks into Saturday's game.

Gators get

first win

AYDEN -- Spring Creek claimed two-of-three doubles matches at Ayden-Grifton and the Gators claimed their first win with a 5-4 victory over the Chargers on Tuesday.

In singles, Stacy Smith, Jami Johnson and Heather Price emerged with wins, while the combinations of Smith-Kaitlin Murphy and Johnson-Ivy Best emerged at No. 1 and 2 doubles.

Spring Creek (1-2, 1-2 Class 1-A Carolina Conference) travels to Wallace-Rose Hill today.

Cougars suffer

home loss

Goldsboro High opened Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-14 loss against Tarboro High on Tuesday afternoon.

First-year coach Marquita Raynor cited Helga Bryant for her all-around court play. Sha'meka Brinson and Tiffany Burden led the team in kills, while Burden served well in the three-set match.

The Cougars fell to 0-8 overall.

sweeps S. Creek

PRINCETON -- Princeton kicked off its 2005 Carolina 1-A Conference campaign with a 25-17, 25-21 sweep of Spring Creek on Tuesday afternoon.

Tasha Whitfield led the Gators with five kills. Kristen Smith served three aces.

Spring Creek fell to 3-2 overall.

claims ECC win

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock began its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season with a 25-13, 25-16 triumph against league newcomer Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Leeann Sager provided three kills and three aces.

The Golden Falcons (6-0, 1-0 ECC) entertain Kinston at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ladies Golf

In the Eastern Ladies League tournament held at Greenville Country Club, Mary Ann Sutton aced the par-3, 94-yard, 10th hole using a 6-iron. Witnessing the ace were Pat Kendle, Sandra Morgan and Cathy Garris -- all in the championship flight. Evelyn Rose won 1st net in the 3rd flight. For the week of Sept. 13, Sutton won the play of the day, Kathy Woodard took low gross, Novella Zambelli claimed low net and Brooke Eason won low putts.
