Prep roundup -- Gators, Spartans battle to 2-2 draw

CLINTON -- Spring Creek opened its 2005 boys soccer campaign and battled to a 2-2, non-conference draw Thursday evening at Union.

The Gators' Chris Cohrs broke a scoreless halftime tie with a goal just two minutes into the second half. The Spartans answered with Samuel Sanchez's goal 11 minutes later.

Darwin Aldana put Spring Creek ahead 2-1 in the 57th minute. However, Union -- again -- responded with a quick goal. Luis Vivar's mark in the 62nd minute concluded the evening's scoring.

The Gators owned a 13-7 edge in shots on goal.

Spring Creek (0-0-1) entertains Southern Wayne at 7 p.m. Monday.

Golden Falcons

dominate Vikings

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock lost just three games in six singles and three doubles matches combined in a 9-0 thrashing of Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foe Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (7-1, 2-0) remained unbeaten in 284 consecutive conference matches. They're expected to receive their first league test next Tuesday at ECC newcomer Wilson Hunt. Raychel Batts, Carlyn Claiborne, Nicole Taylor, Lizzie Sodoma and Katie Perry each posted a shutout. Fourth-seeded Laine Purcell dropped only one game in the opening set in a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Aycock's No. 3 tandem of Kristen Bennett-Emily Quinn triumphed 8-0 in doubles. Claiborne-Purcell and Kristen Prosser-Ashley Kemp each won 8-1.

"It was a total team effort," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "I was pleased with our intensity, enthusiasm and concentration."

Rams seize

EPC 2-A victory

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central cruised past North Lenoir 9-0 and collected its 118th consecutive Eastern Plains 2-A Conference victory Thursday afternoon at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

Top-seeded Meredith Rouse, second-seeded Christi Murphy, third-seeded Ashley Harrell and fifth-seeded Brittany Horton each triumphed 6-0, 6-0. The tandem of Rouse-Horton remained unbeaten in four doubles matches with an 8-0 shutout.

"Meredith played very well for us today in singles and doubles," said Rams coach Donald Clark. "She was really hitting the ball well off both sides. She also did a great job of putting away volleys at the net in doubles."

Clark also commended Murphy's solid forehand strokes and aggressive net play with Harrell in doubles. Murphy-Harrell also improved to 4-0. The third-seeded duo of Michelle Jernigan-Elizabeth Cooper picked up their team-leading sixth victory -- an 8-0 shutout of the Hawks' Madison Gray-Jordan Hoffman.

Greene Central (8-1, 2-0 EPC) entertains playoff nemesis Edenton Holmes next Monday.

"We will get a good test Monday," said Clark. "Edenton has some very good young players, and we will have to play well to win the match."

SEVEN SPRINGS -- James Kenan knocked off defending Carolina 1-A Conference champion Spring Creek 9-0 on Thursday afternoon.

The teams played eight-game pro sets.

Christa Jones, Erica Brown, Megan Sanderlin, Laurie Chestnutt, Jessie Smith and Brittany Mathis each earned a singles victory.

Jones-Brown, Sanderlin-Chestnutt and the third-seeded duo of Queantilla Jones-Porsche Smith each collected a doubles win.

James Kenan (2-3) evened its Carolina Conference worksheet at 1-1, while Spring Creek remained winless in two league contests. The Gators (0-2) travel to Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday, while the Tigers visit Southern Wayne next Monday.

Saints prevail

in ECC 3-A match

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne seized a pair of doubles matches and upended Wilson Beddingfield 6-3 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

The No. 2 tandem of Emily Taylor-Tara Hirsch squeezed past the Bruins' Cameron Liner-Alarie Yelverton 9-7. Third-seeded Katlyn Thornton-Leslie Barrow blitzed Amber-Rae Thompson-Jessica Bullock 8-0 to snap the Saints' 15-match losing streak against ECC opposition.

Hirsch, Thornton, Kasey Powell and Whitli Thornton each collected a straight-set singles win. Hirsch, a first-year player, remained unbeaten in four matches. Katlyn Thornton, a sophomore and first-year player, climbed to 3-1 overall.

"I'm very proud of Tara," said Saints coach Brad Matthews. "She has been a spark to this team. We are really playing well at the bottom and our doubles look much better."

Southern Wayne (2-2, 1-1 ECC) entertains James Kenan next Monday afternoon. The Saints play their home varsity matches at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center on the Mount Olive College campus.

Rosewood concluded the first week of Carolina 1-A Conference play unbeaten with a 9-0 decision against Ayden-Grifton on Thursday afternoon.

Kayce Brantham, Sidney Worrell, Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols, Jamie Andrews and Jillian Casey each took a straight-set victory in singles. Karli Beasley teamed with Andrews for an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

Rosewood (3-1, 2-0 Carolina) continues league play at home next Monday against North Johnston, a first-year program.

Newcomer Wilson Hunt stayed unbeaten in two Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference matches with a 7-2 victory over Eastern Wayne at Wayne Community College on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors' Lauren Bynum picked up her second conference win and dropped just one game against Hunt's Anna Strader. Bynum and doubles mate Casie Musgrave took an 8-2 win against Rainey Wallace-Madison Cauley.

"(It was) not a good showing for us," said Eastern Wayne coach Nancy Dawson.

Eastern Wayne (3-3, 1-1 ECC) plays host to Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne swept the doubles and turned River Birch of Greenville by a 6-3 count on the Warriors' home courts Thursday afternoon.

The No. 3 doubles of Sharon Holland-Kelsi Yates escaped 7-6 (1) against Molly Hostetler-Emily Clark. The No. 1 tandem of Lindsey Frederick-Elizabeth Borden and No. 2 duo Emily Northington-Sarah Corley claimed easy wins.

Corley, Northington and Kate Brantley each won in singles.

Golden Falcons run

to non-league win

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock's Rebekka Katko and Alan Toler each emerged victorious in a non-conference cross country meet contested Tuesday afternoon the Golden Falcons' home course. Katko ran the 3.1-mile trek in 23 minutes, 20 seconds as the Golden Falcons turned back county rival Wayne Christian 23-32. Teammates Danielle Sealey (26:31), Dominique Worrell (27:05), Duna Gylfadottir (27:27) and Megan Milles (27:35) each finished among the top seven.

The Eagles' Jennifer Price (24:50) and Bianca Wall (25:44) captured second and third, respectively.

Toler crossed the finish line on the Hardy Talton Stadium track in 19:34, four seconds ahead of Wayne Christian's Douglas Johnson. The Golden Falcons seized the next eight spots en route to a 19-45 victory over Wilson Fike.

Wayne Christian claimed third with 56 points.

Dalton Denning (20:41), Daniel Stancil (21:03) and Travis Reeves (21:18) completed the top five for the Golden Falcons. Jesse Fryt (21:18) was sixth, followed by Trey Benton, Daniel Pennington and David Williams.

Rams compete

in non-league meet

FARMVILLE -- Greene Central's Tony Tyson and Blair Carraway each provided a top-five time in a four-team, non-conference meet Wednesday afternoon at Farmville Centra.

Tyson ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 3 seconds to lead the Rams (1-3) to 62 points and a third-place finish in the boys' meet. D.H. Conley took first with 26 points, while Farmville claimed second with 41. Jamesville also competed, but didn't have the minimum five runners to figure in the scoring.

Lance Murray ran an 18:34, good for eighth overall for the Rams. Farmville's Brandon Cox won the meet with a 16:56.

In the girls' meet, Greene Central (0-1) and Jamesville did not score as D.H. Conley nipped Farmville Central 28-29.

Ashley Oakes (23:44) recorded a seventh-place time for the Rams.

Spring Creek

now 6-0 overall

Anna Potter served four aces as unbeaten Spring Creek swept Goldsboro 25-13, 25-22, 25-6 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Outside hitter Brooke Albertson provided three kills for the Gators, now 6-0.

Spring Creek opens its Carolina 1-A Conference schedule next Tuesday afternoon at Princeton.

Eagles collect

sixth straight win

DUDLEY -- Middle hitter Courtney Hill provided 10 kills in Rosewood's 25-11, 25-7, 26-24 non-conference sweep of Southern Wayne on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles, unbeaten in six matches, rallied from a 13-4 deficit in the third set to complete their regular-season sweep of the Saints (1-4).

"A great start to the match, but we had a little trouble finishing," said Eagles coach Jennifer Cochran.

Hill added three assists, five digs and six blocks.

Abigail Barrow dished out 13 assists. Stephanie Rhodes complemented Hill's effort with three kills and two blocks. Kelli Gurley contributed two kills and four digs.

Rosewood entertains North Lenoir at 5 p.m. Monday.

Eastern Wayne

tumbles on road

JACKSONVILLE -- Visiting Eastern Wayne emerged victorious in the opening set, but host White Oak turned back the Warriors 18-25, 25-17, 25-15, 26-24 on Thursday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne (3-3) opens its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule next Tuesday at archrival Southern Wayne. The junior varsity match begins at 4:30 p.m.

Chargers at home

Wayne Country Day's Ellen Elmore had nine kills and two assists in the Chargers' 25-13, 25-10, 25-21 home loss to North Johnston on Wednesday.

Stephanie Knutson finished with nine digs for Wayne Country Day (3-3), while Stephanie Sykes added five digs and Sammy Schurhammer had three aces.

PRINCETON -- Charles B. Aycock's Stevie Savage served up five aces to help lead the Golden Falcons to a 25-18, 25-21 win at Princeton on Thursday.

Bridgette Briggs and Cynthia Burroughs notched three kills each for Aycock (5-0), which opens up Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play next Tuesday at Wilson Beddingfield.

DUDLEY -- Spring Creek's Ashley Barwick served on 11 points with two aces in the Gators' 25-21, 25-19 victory at Southern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon. Tasha Whitfield and Jessica Lewis posted five kills apiece for the Gators (3-1).

Spring Creek travels to Princeton on Tuesday in both teams' Carolina 1-A Conference opener.

JACKSONVILLE -- White Oak defeated Eastern Wayne 25-17, 25-17 in non-conference play Thursday afternoon. The Warriors (1-4) travel to Southern Wayne next Tuesday.

Paige Babb collected four kills and five assists as Rosewood grabbed a come-from-behind 27-25, 6-25, 25-18 victory Thursday afternoon at Southern Wayne.

Roxie Phillips added four assists and two digs. Ashley Shaw contributed thee digs and three kills. Caroline Tart chipped in four digs and two kills.

Rosewood (2-4) plays host to North Lenoir on Monday.
