JV football -- Eastern Wayne shuts down Fike

Eastern Wayne's defense accounted for two touchdowns en route to an 18-6, non-conference conquest of Wilson Fike at Little Big Horn.

Foy Coley recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Orlando Midgette returned an interception for a touchdown for the Warriors -- now unbeaten in three contests.

Anthony Williams led the defense with 11 tackles, three sacks and one fumble hit. Coley provided four tackles and one sack. Midgette also had a fumble hit.

Stacey Edwards tallied the Warriors' lone touchdown on offense, a 45-yard run. Edwards finished with 64 yards rushing.

"It was a defensive slugfest," said Warrior coach Brent Holland, whose team had 103 yards of total offense compared to 85 for Fike.

The Golden Demons, of the Class 3-A NEW Athletic 6 Conference, remained winless in two outings.

Eastern Wayne travels to D.H. Conley next Thursday.

C.B. Aycock 8

Goldsboro 6

PIKEVILLE -- Zack Wright snagged the game-winning, two-point conversion pass in the back of the end zone as Charles B. Aycock rallied past Goldsboro 8-6 on Thursday evening at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Goldsboro grabbed a 6-0 lead on Iveon Sprangle's 1-yard plunge nearly midway through the opening quarter.

A defensive struggle ensued until the Golden Falcons forged a 6-6 tie on quarterback Stephen Strouse's 2-yard sneak with 10.6 seconds left in regulation. Strouse's two-point strike to Wright protected Aycock's unblemished overall record at 3-0.

Jevontae Taylor emerged the Golden Falcons' top rusher with 104 yards on 22 carries. Strouse also completed a 52-yard pass to Kelvin Lewis.

Wright, a sophomore inside linebacker, led the defense with six stops.

Sprangle paced the Cougars' offense with 84 yards on 10 carries.

Darren Pittman recorded seven solo tackles and four assists on defense. Dustin Uzzardo added six tackles and three assists. Dan Bryant and Ivory Harris collected five stops each, while Bryant had three assists compared to two for Harris.

Josh McCoy registered four tackles and three assists. A.J. Parker (one assist), Jimmy Speight and Tony Hines each provided three tackles. Sprangle also picked off a Strouse pass.

C.B. Aycock travels to Wilson Fike next Thursday, while Goldsboro (0-3) is the guest of Southern Wayne. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.

Greene Central 32

Ayden-Grifton 7

SNOW HILL -- Jamal Allison rushed for two touchdowns in Greene Central's 32-7, non-conference victory over Ayden-Grifton at the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex.

Corey Hines and Randy Exum each scored a touchdown for the Rams, who claimed their first win three tries.

Greene Central amassed 440 yards total offense, including 369 on the ground.

Southern Wayne 34

Western Harnett 8

LILLINGTON -- Southern Wayne converted two first-quarter turnovers into touchdowns and rolled past Western Harnett 34-8 in non-conference action Thursday evening.

The Saints recovered an Eagle fumble on the game's first play and Kenny Casper cashed in with a 12-yard touchdown run. Western Harnett fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Eric Futrell, like Casper, broke loose for a 12-yard touchdown run. Futrell finished with 155 yards rushing.

Silonte Thompson got into the scoring act when he blocked a punt and returned it five yards for a touchdown -- the first of three on the night. He grabbed a 12-yard scoring strike from quarterback Tristan Bass and scampered 12 yards for his final touchdown.

Casper complemented Futrell's effort with 142 yards rushing, but didn't carry the football in the second half.

"We stayed on offense most of the night," said Saints coach Trae McKee. "It was a total team effort. The boys played hard."

Dequan Cozart paced the Saints' defense with 10 tackles. Paris Armwood and Corey Gibb each had an interception.

Southern Wayne (2-1) entertains Goldsboro next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.
