Walters, Wilkins pace Spring Creek runners

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Eric Walters and teammate Pat Wilkins crossed the finish line first and second, respectively, in Spring Creek's 26-29 triumph over Charles B. Aycock on Thursday afternoon.

Walters ran the 3.1-mile course at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park in 17 minutes, 35 seconds. Wilkins turned in a 17:46 outing, while teammate Alex Casey ended up sixth in 18:57.

Daniel Correll and Daniel Harris seized eighth and ninth, respectively, to give the Gators five runners among the top 10.

Alan Toler led Aycock with a third-place time of 17:49. Dalton Denning took fourth in 18:07, followed by teammate David Pennington's fifth-place effort of 18:42.

Daniel Stancil (7th, 19:00) and Jesse Fryt (10th, 19:29) rounded out the Golden Falcon scoring.

On the girls' side, Aycock's Rebekka Katko emerged the top runner with a meet-winning time of 21:35. Spring Creek's Janet Potter was second in 22:51.

The Gators did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

Spring Creek faces county rival Southern Wayne next Wednesday at Cliffs of the Neuse.

race past Bruins

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Tony Tyson and Lance Murray recorded a 1-2 finish in the Rams' non-conference cross country meet against Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday afternoon.

Tyson ran the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 43 seconds -- nearly one minute faster than Murray. Teammates Cameron Taylor (22:53) and Andrew Jarman (23:40) captured fourth and fifth, respectively, in a 19-42 win.

In the girls' meet, neither team had enough runners to qualify for a team score, but Greene Central's Blair Carraway (28:38) and Ashley Oakes (28:42) emerged in first and second place, respectively.

The Rams return to action Sept. 7 at Farmville Central.

Wilson Fike

gains revenge

WILSON -- Wilson Fike yielded the first goal defensively less than 10 minutes into the game, then used a six-goal outburst to stop Eastern Wayne 6-4 in non-conference play Thursday.

The Golden Demons, of the NEW Athletic 6 Conference, avenged last week's two goal loss and climbed to 1-3-1 overall. The Warriors endured their first defeat in three outings.

Adam Corley tallied the early goal with 35:55 remaining.

After Fike's offensive surge, the Warriors answered with a three-goal run of their own in the final 35 minutes of play. Eric Burgeois scored at 33:30, followed by Chris Brown (13:05) and Jin Lee (10:51).

Lee assisted on Burgeois' mark.

The Golden Demons owned a 32-9 edge in shots on goal and each team attempted six corner kicks.

Vincent Hagedorn had 15 saves in goal for Eastern Wayne.

Volleyball

Princeton slips

past C.B. Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Princeton rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off previously-unbeaten Charles B. Aycock 17-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13 in non-conference play Thursday afternoon.

"It was a great match to watch," said Aycock coach Davis Harris.

Senior outside hitter Kandace Burroughs provided a career-high 16 kills and six blocks in the marathon outing.

"Every one of my players ... the scrappiest group I've ever coached," said Harris. "There is not one player who I can pick out from the match. We covered the floor very well. Our problem came down the stretch where we missed some serves.

"Other than that, I was pleased with the way we played effort-wise. Princeton did a great job. They got the big points when they needed them."

The Bulldogs, of the Carolina 1-A Conference, remained unbeaten in two outings.

Stephanie Daughtry had seven kills, six service aces and 14 digs defensively. Brittany Rose and Brittany Davis combined for 15 assists and 13 digs. Jenny Wallace added four kills, one dig and one block.

Princeton also got solid play from Kaitlyn Haddock and Kristen Parker, who combined for 17 digs, one kill and seven aces. Mandy Wellons contributed six digs.

"Our front row did a good job of killing the ball and looking for open spots on the court, and our back row did a great job of shifting and covering tips and spikes," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast, who seized her first-ever win against her alma mater. "Aycock is a very scrappy team that works hard to get under everything. Our girls had to work hard to find an open hole."

Both teams return to action next Wednesday. The Golden Falcons (2-1) welcome Clayton for a non-conference match. Princeton travels to Union, the reigning Super Six 1-A regular-season champion.

Ward paces Rebels

to non-league win

NEWTON GROVE -- Sierra Ward turned in a 19-kill performance in North Duplin's come-from-behind 12-25, 25-13, 29-27, 25-17 non-conference victory at Hobbton on Thursday afternoon.

Ward added two digs, two blocks and one service in the Rebels' third win of the season.

Brittany Carr and Julie Ivey combined for 10 aces. Jessica Pridgen added four aces and kill, while Casey Pate contributed three aces and one kill.

Danielle Keel and Erica Lane each chipped in two kills.

"I'm real proud of the girls for hanging in there and capturing this win," said Rebels coach Heather Best. "This was an important win for us. We needed it, especially with conference play coming around the corner.

"Hobbton is a very scrappy team and they fought hard the whole way."

North Duplin (3-1) is off until Sept. 13 when it entertains North Johnston in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Defense shines

in Eagles' win

Courtney Hill, Clare Narron and Kelly Gurley turned in strong defensive performances as Rosewood swept Union 25-23, 25-19, 25-17 in non-conference play Thursday evening.

Narron and Gurley each had 10 digs defensively. Hill added eight blocks and eight digs to go along with five kills.

"A great defensive game," said Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran. "We did not have a great offensive night, so we focused on our defense."

Abigail Barrow dished out nine assists to go with four digs. Stephanie Rhodes contributed four blocks, four digs, three kills and one ace.

Rosewood (4-0) travels to Midway next Tuesday.

NEW BERN -- The No. 2 doubles of Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave earned the match-clinching victory as Eastern Wayne turned back New Bern 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors grabbed a 4-2 lead in singles play.

Top-seeded Ashley Smith rallied past Nicole Clowers 2-6, 6-3, 8-6. Bynum prevailed at the No. 2 slot, while Casie and Mollie Musgrave also prevailed. Casie seized a first-set tiebreaker in her straight-set win.

"We had much stronger singles play down the line," said Warriors coach Nancy Dawson.

The Bears won two of three doubles matches.

Southern Wayne's No. 3 doubles of Katlyn Thornton-Leslie Barrow pulled out a tight two-point victory and helped the unbeaten Saints stop Rosewood 5-4 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.

Rosewood (0-2) forged a 4-4 tie with doubles victories from Kayce Brantham-Sidney Worrell and Missy Bailey-Erica Nichols.

In singles, the Saints (2-0) got wins from Thornton, Kasey Powell, Tara Hirsch and Christy Westbrook. Powell claimed a second- and third-set tiebreaker in a 1-6, 7-6, 7-4 decision against Bailey.

The Eagles' top two seeds, Brantham and Worrell, each picked up a straight-set win.

KINSTON -- North Lenoir swept the singles and doubles in a 9-0, non-conference win over county rival Kinston on Thursday afternoon at Bill Fay Park.

Fifth-seeded Lauren Harris and sixth-seeded Kristen Penuel each shut out their respective opponent in singles. Also picking up wins were top-seeded Rachel Sasser, Ruthanne Hardy (No. 2), Ashley Fillipelli (No. 3) and Haley Bright (No. 4).

Hardy dropped just two games.

The duos of Fillipelli-Bright and Penuel-Madison Gray each posted an 8-0 shutout. Sasser-Hardy won 8-1.

North Lenoir suffered a 9-0 loss Wednesday against East Duplin.

The Hawks (1-4) open Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play next Tuesday against Farmville Central. Match time is 4 p.m. at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central warmed up for defense of its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference title with a 9-0, non-conference win Thursday afternoon against Southern Nash.

The Rams (5-1) open EPC at home next Tuesday against North Pitt.

"I'm pleased with where we are right now as we head into the conference season next Tuesday," said veteran Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "Our doubles has improved tremendously this week. Meredith Rouse and Brittany Horton turned in the best performance we've had this season at number one doubles.

"They were aggressive at the net, and they did a great job of stepping across and knocking off volleys."

The top-seeded Rouse-Horton improved to 2-0 with an 8-1 decision against the Ladybirds' Amanda Keeny-Heather Sanders. Christi Murphy-Ashley Harrell and Michelle Jernigan-Elizabeth Cooper also won their respective doubles matches.

Murphy, Harrell, Jernigan, Horton and Cooper each climbed to 6-1 overall with victories in singles play. Rouse, the No. 1 seed, boosted her record to 5-2.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Jordan Coor served up 10 aces in the Gators' 25-3, 25-10 win at home over Southern Wayne on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Gators topped Hobbton 27-25, 25-20 at home. Kristin Smith and Ashley Barwick combined for seven aces in Tuesday's win. Tasha Whitfield added five kills.

Spring Creek travels to Southern Wayne on Sept. 7.

Hawks collect

VANCEBORO -- North Lenoir's Jordan Hudson was 17-for-19 from the service line in the Hawks' 25-21, 21-25, 25-19 win at West Craven on Wednesday.

Shanique Thomas was 14-for-17 from the service line and added two kills.

The Hawks (4-2) host Kinston on Tuesday.

DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne wrapped up match play in singles and dominated the doubles in an 8-1 triumph over county archrival Southern Wayne on Thursday afternoon. Lindsay Frederick, Elizabeth Borden, Kelsi Yates, Kate Brantley and Emily Northington each posted a win in singles. The teams played eight-game pro sets.

In doubles, the combinations of Frederick-Bordon, Yates-Northington and Brantley-Sarah Corley prevailed.

Katrice Monroe emerged the Saints' lone singles winner.
