LAGRANGE -- Tyler Wicks and Walker Gourley provided key, late-inning RBI hits as Wayne County Post 11 rallied past Lenoir County 6-5 in an American Junior Legion contest at North Lenoir High School on Tuesday evening.
Post 11 seized the lead in the fifth.
Garrett Barfield ripped a solo home run. With two outs, Gourley doubled and took third on a great "dirt-ball read," said head coach Trae McKee. Wicks plated Gourley with a single.
Willie Koernig ignited the seventh-inning rally with a lead-off single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Gourley grounded out to score Koernig.
Wayne County led 6-4.
Lenoir County pulled within 6-5 on three consecutive singles in its half of the seventh. However, Post 11 hurler Evan Cavanaugh settled down and earned the complete-game win. He scattered seven hits and struck out five.
"Evan pitched good and worked out of a couple of jams," McKee said. "Every time we've put him out there this summer, he's given us a chance to win."
Koernig provided three hits, including a home run. Gourley and Wicks each batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nolan Lancaster doubled in three at-bats.
Wayne County (6-9, 5-6 conference) concludes the regular season at home today against Pitt County East.
Post 94 Juniors win
SNOW HILL -- Three players banged out two hits each as Snow Hill Post 94 claimed a 12-7 victory against Aycock on the Greene Central High diamond Tuesday evening.
Will McLawhorn and Billy Teston each batted 2-for-3 for Post 94. Teammate Craven Taylor ended the night 2-for-4.
Jordan Evans emerged the winning pitcher.
Snow Hill (5-10, 5-6 conference) entertains Pitt County West today at 7 p.m.
Snow Hill rained out
SNOW HILL -- A late-evening storm washed out Tuesday's season-ending Senior American Legion contest between Snow Hill Post 94 and Beaufort County.
The teams return to action today in the Area I East Division playoffs. Snow Hill, the No. 5 seed, is the guest of Kinston. Beaufort drew the No. 2 seed and entertains New Bern.

District 8 Softball
10-U -- Wayne County's 10 and under All-Stars won the District 8 Babe Ruth softball tournament in Greene County last weekend. Wayne County will start play in the state tournament in New Bern today at 3 p.m. In District play, Wayne County defeated Greene County 10-5, and topped Kinston/Lenoir County twice -- 2-1 in eight innings, then 13-3. Reagan Herndon finished 6-7 during the tourney, while Misty Edwards (3-8), Taylor Cox (2-5) and Katie Gay (2-6) also paced the offense. On the mound, Madison Davis struck out 23 in eight innings of work, allowing no runs and no hits, while Misty Edwards had 19 strikeouts in nine innings.
