Forbes named ECU assitant

GREENVILLE -- Former Winthrop University assistant head coach Scott Forbes has been named the new hitting instructor at East Carolina University according to an announcement from head baseball coach Randy Mazey Tuesday.

A former standout at North Carolina Wesleyan, Forbes comes to ECU after spending the last three years as the recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor at Winthrop. This past season, he served as assistant head coach, helping the Eagles (44-21) to the Big South Tournament title and their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2001.

"Scott will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff," said Mazey. "He is very highly respected in the coaching community and has been a huge part of the success that Winthrop has had over the past several years. I couldn't be more excited about the staff that we have put together with Scott joining Billy Godwin and Ryan Riley. I really feel like our baseball program has taken one step closer to Omaha."

Forbes' also served as the third base coach, was in charge of conditioning, academic monitoring, team travel and scouting. He also worked with the catchers, first basemen, and outfielders as well as instructing the team on base running.

Prior to his arrival at Winthrop, Forbes spent four years as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina as well as one year as an assistant at North Carolina Wesleyan.

Forbes was also the head coach of the Wilmington Sharks of the wood bat Coastal Plain League during the summers of 1999 and 2000. He led the 1999 team to a Coastal Plains League Championship and was named the league's Coach of the Year for his efforts. His 2000 team was first half-champion.

Forbes played his collegiate ball at Middle Georgia College (1994) before transferring to N.C. Wesleyan (1995-97). He led the Bishops to a fifth-place finish in the 1997 Division III College World Series, and was voted most valuble player of the Dixie Athletic Conference Tournament the same year.

Forbes also broke the Division III record for doubles in a season in 1997, which he now shares with two other players.

Forbes and his wife, Mandy have one daughter, Hannah Brooke.
