Post 94 doubles up Nash

SNOW HILL -- Consistent and balanced.

The two words best describe Snow Hill's Senior American Legion 6-3 win on Wednesday night at home against Nash County.

On the mound, Post 94 got eight solid innings from right-hander Richie Turner, who gave up three runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Turner yielded one in the first on an RBI single by Jeffrey Matthews, then didn't allow another run or hit until the top of the sixth.

During that stretch, the Ayden-Grifton righty allowed only one base runner in retiring 13-of-14 batters he faced. The Post 94 defense was flawless during Turner's eight innings of work with their only error coming with two outs in the ninth inning with Jordy Davis on the hill.

Davis picked up the save, pitching around a two-out walk, then the infield-error to finish off the Area I East victory.

"At least that happened with two outs. Richie battled and seemed to have the right pitch at the right time," Snow Hill coach James "Rabbit" Fulghum said.

Snow Hill (10-8 overall) improved to 7-8 in the division as Fulghum's squad remains in the middle of the division standings, grouped with three other teams -- Wilson, Kinston and Nash County -- all with at least seven losses. Post 58 (8-10 overall) fell to 7-8 in league play.

"Probably behind Wayne County, Pitt 39 and New Bern as the third team, there is not a lot of difference with everybody else," Fulghum said. "It's all pretty equal."

Post 94 finished with 11 hits against the righty Matthews as Tommy Cobb, Jordan Scott, John Conway and Travis Rouse all finished with two hits each. Rouse drove in three with base hits in the sixth and eighth, and Conway posted two RBI and scored two runs.

Cobb reached safely in his first three plate appearance, driving home a run in the third and scoring in the sixth on the first of three RBI by Rouse. In the ninth, Rouse gave Post 94 some breathing room with a two-run, two-out single to push the game to its final margin.

From the lead-off spot, Scott scored Post 94's first two runs.

"You have some highs and lows in a season, but hopefully we started back up the hill a little bit," Fulghum said.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the sixth, Post 58's Will Johnson and Brian Allen delivered back-to-back doubles with Allen's two-bagger proving just out of reach of Scott -- diving in shallow center. Thomas Evans brought home Johnson, who had to hold up at third on Allen's double, with a single to center, while Matthews tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly to plate Johnson.

Snow Hill took the lead for good one inning later on the first of two, two-out singles by Rouse.

Post 58 got three more base runners in the last three innings but all of them came with two outs as Turner, Davis and the Snow Hill defense kept Nash County off of the board.

With four games left in the regular season, Post 94 returns to action on Friday, taking on division-contender Wayne County at home at 7 p.m.

Notes: Catcher Lance Murray had three assists, while Turner, Conway and Hunter Chase had two each. Blake Taylor, who added one hit, had 11 put-outs at first, while Chase had four in center. Snow Hill's remaining schedule -- Saturday vs. Pitt County Post 39, Sunday at New Bern, Monday vs. Beaufort County.
