Post 11 gets offensive at home

MOUNT OLIVE -- For the third consecutive game, Post 11 has been downright offensive.

After posting 17-6 and 19-15 triumphs last week, Wayne County continued its domination at the plate on a soggy Sunday night by pounding Ahoskie Post 102, 19-2.

Airlon Vinson, Jesse Lancaster and Matthew Holloman combined to drive in 12 runs as Post 11 improved to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the division.

Ahoskie fell to 3-10 with the loss.

"We're starting to hit the ball a lot better with people on base," Post 11 coach Brad Reaves said.

But for a while, it looked like Wayne County wouldn't score any runs on this night as a torrential downpour during the top of the first forced the umpires to delay the game just as Post 11 leadoff hitter Jackson Massey was about to step up to the plate in the home half of the inning with Post 102 leading 1-0.

Unfortunately for Ahoskie, the rains subsided and the hit parade began as Wayne County tied the game in the bottom of the first and erupted for five runs in the second.

Massey tripled to start the home half of the first and scored when Lancaster grounded out to first. In the second, four walks, an Ahoskie error and a three-run double by Vinson helped Post 11 extend its lead to 6-1.

"You're always worried about coming out flat after a rain delay," Reaves said. "We were able to come back and scratch out a few runs early."

Post 11 extended its lead to 12-2 with a five-run fourth, then put the contest away by scoring three in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Vinson finished the night 3-for-5 a double and drove in five runs, Lancaster was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, and Holloman went 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Also for Wayne County, Massey was 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored five times, Austin Hood went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Joey Moye was 1-for-4, Bennett Jeffreys was 1-for-2 and scored twice, Will Spence was 1-for-1 with two runs scored, and Garrett Sutton finished up 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI.

Brandon Matthews was 2-for-3 to lead Post 102.

T.J. Hinson (3-0) threw three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. He struck out two and gave up just one hit. Adam Williams started the game on the mound for Post 11 and allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits, walking two while striking out four.

Heath Britt took the loss as Post 102 sent four hurlers to the mound.

Sunday's game started a grueling stretch that will see Wayne County play 15 games in 17 days to wrap up the regular season. Post 11 hits the road today to play a game at Edenton and will return home Tuesday to face Kinston.
