Aycock keeps streak intact

VANCEBORO -- David Rose scampered home on a seventh-inning wild pitch as Aycock nipped West Craven 9-8 on the West Craven High School diamond Saturday evening.

Tied at 8-8, Rose led off the Aycock seventh with a single and moved into scoring position on Will Spence's base hit. A few pitches later, Rose coasted home to help Aycock capture its sixth consecutive victory.

It was Aycock's third straight one-run win of the season.

Spence and Joseph Toler each finished the day 2-for-4. Bradley Taylor contributed two hits, including a double, and scored three runs in five plate appearances.

Jay Rose claimed the pitching win in relief of Daniel Stancil, who replaced starter Brandon Price earlier in the game.

Aycock, which let a 5-1 lead slip away late in the game, improved to 6-4 overall.

On Friday, Thomas Pilkington helped account for all three runs in a 3-2 home victory against Lenoir County. It was Lenoir County's first conference defeat of the season.

Pilkington plated Spence with an RBI triple in the first inning and later scored on an infield error. He lofted a game-winning sacrifice fly to right field to score Evan Medford, who singled to start the inning.

Pilkington, Medford and Spence each contributed two hits.

David Rose picked up the mound win.

Aycock continues play Tuesday at archrival Wayne County. Game time is 7 p.m. at Southern Wayne High School.
