Post 11 rained out ... again

NEW BERN -- Maybe these late afternoon rainstorms are becoming a good omen for Wayne County Post 11.

Then again ... maybe not.

The latest postponement occurred Thursday afternoon. Mother Nature intervened and washed out Post 11's Area I East contest at New Bern, which handed Pitt County its first loss of the season Wednesday evening.

Two rainouts this week have undoubtedly saved the pitching staff, but also put pressure on coach Brad Reaves to find open dates in an already packed schedule. Wayne County (6-1) will make up a game next Tuesday at Wilson Post 13, but the New Bern matchup has not been announced.

Post 11 starts a stretch of five games in five days, beginning at home today in its own invitational tournament.

Snow Hill (3-3) kicks off the seven-team, three-day event with a 4 p.m. battle against Duplin County. Post 94 coach James "Rabbit" Fulghum said Drew Sowers will start on the mound.

Post 11 faces Jacksonville in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

Reaves said Friday morning that Notre Dame (Va.) could not participate today, so the 1 p.m. contest with Fuquay-Varina has been cancelled.

Play continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at Mount Olive College.

Sutton sparks Post 11

SMITHFIELD -- Taylor Sutton delivered the game-winning single in the ninth inning as Wayne County Post 11 prevailed 5-4 against Smithfield-Selma in Junior Legion action Thursday evening.

Sutton plated Walker Gourley, who drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sutton finished the contest 2-for-3.

Michael Mintz added a double and an RBI in three plate appearances. Chris Massey batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Sterling Grice provided three innings of two-hit, two-strikeout relief and claimed the mound win. Sutton started and scattered four hits in five-plus innings. Anthony Brogden threw one-third of an inning.

Wayne County (3-2) forced the extra-inning affair with a single run in the seventh. Grice produced a lead-off single and scored two batters later when Smithfield-Selma failed to turn a double play on Mintz's fielder's choice ground ball.

Post 11 continues play this evening at Rocky Mount.

Aycock falls on road

WINTERVILLE -- Aycock's Will Edgerton carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but Pitt County West changed the game's outcome with five consecutive singles.

The hit parade led to a three-run uprising and an eventual 4-2 victory on the South Central High School diamond Thursday evening.

Edgerton went the distance, striking out four and yielding seven hits.

Jay Rose led Aycock with two hits in three at-bats. Bradley Taylor contributed a double in four plate appearances.

Aycock (1-4) entertains Spring Hope at 7 p.m. today.
