SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Devin Graves went the distance on the mound, striking out six against one walk, as the Gators defeated North Johnston 6-5 to close the regular season on Tuesday.

Spring Creek (6-14 overall) finished the season at 5-7 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference. The Panthers (3-14 overall) concluded at 2-10 in league play.

The Gators trailed 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, but rallied for five runs to claim the win. Blake Thompson scored the game-winning run.

Alex Casey led Spring Creek at the plate with two hits and RBI, while Graves and Michael Russell drove in one run each. Jed Potter scored twice from the lead-off spot.

Brad Holloman finished with two hits for North Johnston.

Tennis

Hawks edge Swansboro

SNOW HILL -- North Lenoir emerged with wins in three of five singles matches against Swansboro on its way to a 5-4 victory over the Pirates in the first round of the Class 2-A N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team team tennis tournament on Tuesday.

The win sends the Hawks into the second round where they will host Fairmont on Tuesday.

Jared O'Dell, James Parker and Clinton O'Dell emerged with singles wins for North Lenoir (15-3).

In doubles, the combinations of Alex Mills-Jared O'Dell and Ryan Ipock-Parker emerged with wins.

Rams advance in 2-A

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central began defense of its N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A dual-team championship with a 9-0 victory against Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rams, unbeaten in 18 outings, shut out an opponent for the 17th time this season. They continue play at home next Tuesday against Edenton Holmes.

"I thought we played very well today," Greene Central coach Brad Sauls said. "Roanoke Rapids has a solid team from top to bottom and they made us hit a lot of balls. I was very pleased with the variety that was displayed by my players.

"We had a good mix of spins, net approaches, lobs and drop shots."

Brent Darden and Lin Hall each shut out their respective opponents in singles. Chris Hardy, Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo and Bryan Pollock each tallied a straight-set win.

Softball

NL gets two EPC wins

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Morgan Worthington struck out a career-high 15 batters to help lead the Hawks to a 2-0 win at home against SouthWest Edgecombe on Wednesday.

Worthington yielded only two hits and two walks in a complete-game effort.

Lauren Hudson drove in one run for the Hawks, while Leslie Oliver and Brittany Sanders had one hit each.

North Lenoir drilled Tarboro 13-0 on Tuesday.

Randi Moulton finished with three hits, including two triples and one double. Chanae Lynch and Ashley Griffin posted two hits each. Sanders picked up the win on the mound, striking out 12 against no walks.

NJ falls in playoffs

SOUTHPORT -- North Johnston's Jenna Gudac scored her 40th goal of the season on an assist from Haley Newsome in the first half of the Panthers' 6-1 loss at South Brunswick in the first round of the Class 1-A/2-A playoffs on Wednesday.

Gudac's goal gave North Johnston a 1-0 lead, but the Cougars rallied to score two more before halftime to take a 2-1 lead.

Just out of halftime, South Brunswick scored to make it 3-1and went on outscore the Panthers 3-0 the rest of the way. The Cougars outshot the Panthers 13-6.

Allison Hinnant had four saves in goal for North Johnston.

Rachel Bisesi, Christina Strickland, Heather Creech, Kelley Smith, Brandi Brinchek and Kristy Harkins all played in their final games for the Panthers.

JV baseball

CBA drops EW in six

Charles B. Aycock's Jay Rose pitched all six innings, striking out eight and giving up only one earned run on two hits in a 12-2 win against Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

The game was called after the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.

Brandon Price paced the Golden Falcons (19-1) with three hits and three RBI. Nick Weaver, Jordan Carr and Daniel Stancil delivered two hits each.

Aycock closes the regular season at Washington today.

Blue Devils top GC

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Billy Teston finished with two hits, including a double, in the Rams' 13-5 loss to South Lenoir on Tuesday.

Greene Central (12-11 overall) concluded the season at 6-4 in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference. The Blue Devils (11-7 overall) improved to 5-5.

Chris Justice picked up the win on the mound for the Blue Devils, while Garrett Jones provided four hits in five plate appearances.

Falcons remain unbeaten

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Brooke Edgerton had two hits in two plate appearances as the Golden Falcons remained unblemished after a 12-0 win at home against Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Aycock (13-0 overall) is now 7-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference heading into its season finale today at home against Washington.

Leigh Smith picked up the win on the mound for the Falcons, yielding just two hits in five innings of work. Smith struck out one and walked one in the five-inning shutout.

Emily Jordan added a triple at the plate for Aycock.

SW strikes early

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne scored 11 runs in the first two innings and rolled to an 11-1 win over Eastern Wayne on Monday at home.

Brianna Loftin finished with two hits, including a two-run home run, while Ashley Clemens posted two singles and five RBI.

Whitli Thornton and Christy Westbrook combined on a four-hitter for Southern Wayne on the mound.

The Saints (8-8) finished tied for second in the Eastern Carolina Conference at 5-3.

Dixie Youth Majors

WCDS 11, Grantham 1 -- Cody Neal and Aaron DeBusk combined for 12 strikeouts in a no-hitter for Wayne Country Day. Neal and Cody Davis paced WCDS at the plate. Davis finished with four RBI and two doubles.

Babe Ruth Majors

EW Warriors 14, Fremont 4 -- Wes Stewart's struck out five, while Benito Avilia had three hits, including two triples.

EW Warriors 2, Grantham 0 --Grantham's Broadwell struck out five and Eastern Wayne's Jenkins and Wicks combined to strike out eight in a pitcher's duel.

Lane Tree Ladies Golf

For the week ending May 8, Linda Cannon won low net, while Donna Adams took game of the week. Theresa Shearin claimed low putts.

Walnut Creek Ladies Golf

Novella Zambelli claimed low putts in the championship flight for the Eastern League Ladies two day finals held at New Bern Country Club. Marilyn Reaves won low putts for the 5th flight.
