NCHSAA track championships begin Friday

GREENSBORO -- Two area pole vaulters and one outstanding distance runner will compete for gold medals in the Classes 1-A and 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association track and field championships.

In 1-A, Rosewood's Olivia Neal enters as the mideast regional champion after last weekend's competition on her home track.

In 3-A, Charles B. Aycock pole vaulter Amy Fryt looks to improve upon her regional-winning 10-foot mark. Also, Eastern Wayne senior Will Collins goes in search of the 1,600-meter run title.

Action begins on the 3-A ranks today at N.C. A&T State University. The 1-A championships are scheduled for Saturday.

Two schools will trying to add to their consecutive state title streak of three in the 3-A meet. Greensboro Ben Smith will be gunning for its fourth consecutive men's 3-A title while Durham Hillside tries to make it four straight in the women's competition.

The 1-A meet on Saturday will see field events get underway at 10 a.m. with the first running event an hour later.

Durham School of the Arts has won outright or shared the women's 1-A team crown in each of the last three state meets, while Rocky Point Heide Trask won its initial team state title last year in the 1-A men's competition.
