MOC swept in non-conference softball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Kristi Edmunds' two-run homer in the second inning broke a scoreless tie as nationally 21st-ranked LeMoyne (N.Y.) defeated Mount Olive 4-0 in Game 1 of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Mount Olive pitcher Ashley Napoles finished with a four-hitter in the loss, retiring 15 of the final 17 batters she faced.

LeMoyne completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory in Game 2 as Jennifer Winters' two-run singles and RBI-doubles by Sarah Reed and Kim Kalec highlighted a seven-run fourth inning.

In Game 1, after both teams were retired in order in the first inning, Kristen DesLauriers singled to left center to lead off the top of the second and one out later, Edmunds' lined the first pitch over the left field fence to put LeMoyne on top 2-0. Two Trojan errors in the top of the third led to two unearned runs to give the Dolphins a four-run lead.

Napoles (1-9) then retired the next eight batters before issuing a two-out walk in the fifth. The only other baserunner Napoles allowed was on a two-out double by Kalec in the sixth.

LeMoyne starter Erin Phaneuf (3-0) retired the first 14 batters she faced before Bailey Harrell lined a single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. But Phaneuf struck out the next batter and retired the first two batters in the sixth before reliever Caylinn Christophersen came in and retired all four batters she faced. Phaneuf struck out four, walked none and combined with Christophersen to face only one batter above the minimum.

In the second game, Mount Olive (10-23) got on the scoreboard first as Harrell worked a 16-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the second. Pinch-runner Alexis Briley moved to second on Jamie Pruitt's sacrifice and Melissa Bright lined a double to left-center to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Trojans starter Shauna Cowdrey (5-10) allowed only one hit in the first two innings before Edmunds led off the third with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on an error as LeMoyne (8-2) tied the game 1-1. Emma Murphy singled home a run and eventually scored on Reed's double down the left field line. Winters followed with a single to center to bring in two more runs and give the Dolphins a 5-1 lead.

Erin Case relieved Cowdrey and allowed a single by Kristen DesLauriers, but left fielder Erin Wilson threw Winters out at the plate for the second out. Kalec doubled to right-center to drive in a run and scored one batter later on Megan Leppin's single to extend LeMoyne's lead to 7-1.

Edmunds tripled home a run in the sixth inning, but was thrown out at home by shortstop Kim Goens one batter later as the Trojans avoided being run-ruled. Aimee Rogers pitched the final two innings for Mount Olive, retiring the side in order in the seventh inning.
