SHALOTTE -- Southern Wayne's Ashton Langston yielded just three hits in seven innings of work as the Saints defeated home-standing West Brunswick 5-2 Monday evening in the Beach Diamond Invitational.

Southern Wayne improved to 4-3 overall as it defeated the defending Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association champion.

The Saints face North Davidson tonight at 7 p.m. in a winner's bracket match-up at the same site.

Langston (2-1) struck out six and walked two with one hit batsman, giving up only two earned runs.

"He's throwing the baseball well and keeping it down in the zone," Saints' coach Trae McKee said. "He's getting a lot of ground-ball outs."

Matthew Holloman and Chris Carr drove in first-inning runs, while Austin Hood pushed home a run in the second with a fielder's choice. Michael Stewart had a single and two sacrifice bunts. Logan Porter added a hit and scored twice.

Southern Wayne had four total sacrfices on the game.

"We gave ourselves up and played some good team baseball," McKee said.
