Prep roundup: Four Rebels combine on no-hitter at Lakewood

ROSEBORO - North Duplin used four pitchers Wednesday night in its season opener at Lakewood to no-hit the Leopards through seven innings in a 17-1 win.

The Rebels' Sterling Grice, Doug Lloyd, Matt Braswell, and Brad Lloyd combined for seven innings -- giving up one unearned run, striking out 10 and walking 10. Doug Lloyd was credited with the win.

North Duplin (1-0) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, with Braswell knocking in one run and Will Lewis doubling in two RBI. Another run came in the second when Grice scored on a wild pitch. Lewis and Grice contributed to a four-run rally in the third, but then the Rebel bats were silenced until the top of the seventh.

Brad Lloyd, Travis Dubois, and Ryan Smith each had two RBI in the seventh, when North Duplin exploded for nine runs.

Lakewood's lone run came in the fifth, when a runner reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

North Duplin (1-0) hosts Hobbton today at 4 p.m.

Gators slip

past Hobbton

NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek's Jed Potter had two hits, including a double, and two RBI as the Gators emerged with a 7-6 win at Newton Grove Hobbton on Wednesday in both team's season opener.

In the top of the seventh, Blake Thompson slugged a double to left-center field, before Devin Graves singled home Thompson for the game-winning run.

Graves emerged the winning-pitcher, striking out five in two innings of shutout relief work.

The Gators, who made seven errors leading to four unearned runs, trailed 6-2 going into the top of the sixth, but rallied for four runs in the sixth keyed by Potter's two-run double.

Spring Creek (1-0) travels to North Lenoir on Friday.

Hawks top

rival in opener

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Jacob Alphin went 2-3 with a solo home run and a double as the Hawks defeated archrival Kinston 7-6 at home on Wednesday.

North Lenoir trailed the Vikings 4-0 after 2 1/2 innings, but rallied to outscore Kinston 7-2 the rest of the way.

The Hawks' Stihl Sowers completed the game on the mound after entering in the fourth inning and picked up the win.

Alex McGaughey and Sowers contributed two hits each for North Lenoir (1-0), while Josh Tyndall and C.C. Croom had two hits apiece for the Vikings. Kinston's Jonathan Flowers had a two-run home run.

Tyndall went the distance for the Vikings, yielding eight hits in picking up the loss.

The Hawks host Spring Creek on Friday.

Cougars fall

to Fike

Goldsboro's Eric McLean had two hits in the Cougars' 21-4 loss at home to Wilson Fike on Wednesday.

Jacob Davis, Zach Crumpler, Bobby Vick and Brett Parker contributed two hits each for the Golden Demons.

Eugene Norman picked up the loss on the mound for Goldsboro, while Davis notched the win for Fike.

The Cougars travel to Pikeville to face Charles B. Aycock in both team's Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener on Tuesday.

Saints open solid

in Wilson

WILSON -- Southern Wayne's Lesli Darden yielded just one run in seven innings of work as the Saints opened the regular season with a 5-1 win at Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday.

Darden gave up nine hits, but walked none and struck out two.

Meredith Davis paced Southern Wayne at the plate with a 3-4 effort with a double and two runs scored. Rachel Reynolds added two hits, including a double and an RBI. Danielle Wilkins contributed a triple for the Saints (1-0).

Southern Wayne and Beddingfield, future Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foes, battle again on Friday in Dudley.

Bulldogs defeat

Eastern Wayne

Eastern Wayne's Christine Fricke went 2-3 with three runs scored as the Warriors suffered a 22-16 loss at home to Princeton on Wednesday.

Walks plagued both teams in the contest as the two foes combined for 31 bases on balls.

The Warriors and Bulldogs combined for 24 hits.

Lydia Hirschy had three hits for Eastern Wayne, while teammate Emily Sasser added two hits.

The Warriors' Carrie Adams picked up the the loss in 2-plus innings of work.

April Keene tossed 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win for Princeton (1-0).

Eastern Wayne (0-1) travels to Havelock today, while Princeton takes on West Johnston in Benson on Friday.

N. Lenoir pounds

Vikings

KINSTON -- North Lenoir's Randi Moulton had four hits in five plate appearances, including two doubles and two RBI as the Hawks blasted Kinston 12-2 in six innings on Wednesday.

Brittany Sanders added three hits and three RBI for North Lenoir, while Leslie Oliver had two extra base hits and two RBI. Emily Brown contributed two hits for the Hawks (1-0).

North Lenoir's Morgan Worthington went the distance on the mound -- striking out 12 against two walks and yielding only three hits.

The Hawks travel to Spring Creek on Friday.

ROSEBORO -- North Duplin's Kayla Myers (three RBI) and Elizabeth Lane (two RBI) had four hits each in the Rebels' 10-0 win in five innings at Lakewood on Wednesday.

North Duplin scored six runs in the fourth to break the game open as Rebel pitcher Brittany Carr went the full five innings -- yielding just three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Kristen Jones added two hits with one RBI for North Duplin (1-0), who hosts Hobbton today.

Rosewood sweeps

Southern Wayne

Rosewood's Wesley Lovelady opened the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Southern Wayne's Matt McLamb as the Eagles rolled to a 9-0 sweep over the Saints on Wednesday.

Joey Churchwell, Brandon Hietpas, Ty Johnson, J.P. Cummins and Daniel Ellis also recorded singles wins for the Eagles (1-0), which host Ayden-Grifton today.

The doubles combinations of Lovelady-Churchwell, Hietpas-Johnson and Drew Kriger-Josh Fail helped Rosewood sweep the three doubles matches.

The Saints are slated to face C.B. Aycock on Monday.

CBA defends

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's top four seeds -- Danny Fairchild, Brandon Howard, Sean Kelly and David Williams -- each claimed wins as the Golden Falcons defeated Wilson Fike 6-2 in their season-opening match on Wednesday.

The doubles' combinations of Fairchild and Howard and Kelly and Williams also emerged with victories. Number three doubles was not contested.

Josh Forsythe and Jeremy Menzel claimed the Golden Demons two wins in singles.

Aycock (1-0) travels to future Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foe Wilson Hunt today.

Bucs too much

for Warriors

WILMINGTON -- Eastern Wayne's Drew Jackson (No. 5 singles) emerged as his team's lone winner as the Warriors suffered an 8-1 loss at Wilmington Laney on Wednesday.

At No. 4 singles, Eastern Wayne's Alex Bryant lost the first set 6-1, but rallied to take the second set 6-3, before falling in the final set 6-4.

The Warriors host Washington in their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener today.

Middle schools

Frink soccer 5, C.M. Eppes 0 -- Frink's Sasha Holeman recorded a hat-trick (three goals), while teammates Evan Price and Jesse Shimer contributed one goal each. Thomas Faulker-Cannon had the shutout in goal. The Cavaliers improved to 2-0.
