MOC women's season halted in CVAC quarters

WILSON - Kelly Lamotta scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the first half to lead No. 3 seed Barton to a 60-43 win over No. 6 seed Mount Olive in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball tournament on Wednesday at Wilson Gym.

With the loss, the Trojans' season ends at 12-16. Latoria Harvey finished her collegiate career with her 13th double-double, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Barton (15-11) scored the first two baskets of the game and led the entire way. Mount Olive pulled within 10-7 after a putback by Teneal Boone, but Barton answered with a 16-5 run to extend its lead to 14 points with 5:09 left in the half. The Trojans cut the lead to nine before Barton took a 31-20 lead at halftime.

Barton built the lead to 18 points before the Trojans came back with an 8-0 run as Ashley Jones' basket pulled Mount Olive within 41-31 with 10:22 left in the game. But Barton scored the next five points and the Trojans never got any closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Boone finished with seven points for the Trojans, while LeAnne Simms tallied five assists and four steals. Adrienne Walker finished with 11 points and eight assists for Barton. Lamotta, who pulled down eight rebounds, was 10-for-17 from the field.

Mount Olive eclipsed the 10-win mark for the second consecutive year, marking the first time in nine years the Trojans posted double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons.
