Young pumps in career-best 30 for MOC

PEMBROKE -- Victor Young led seven players in double figures with a career-high 30 points and Mount Olive eclipsed the 100-point mark for the fourth time in seven games as the Trojans defeated UNC Pembroke 115-83 in a non-conference NCAA Division II men's basketball game Wednesday.

The Trojans broke open a close game, turning a one-point lead with five minutes left in the first half into a 21-point lead four minutes into the second half.

Young accounted for the first six points of the game for Mount Olive (6-1) with a three-point play and a 3-pointer. The Trojans built a 26-15 lead with 11 minutes, 55 seconds left in the first half after a pair of jumpers by Melvin Creddle.

UNC Pembroke (2-7) came back with 10 unanswered points, including a pair of 3-pointers by Jerrell Hunter as the Braves pulled within 26-25. Mount Olive still held a one-point lead with 5:33 when Montel Jones and Plinio Broering combined for 10 points in a 12-3 run.

The Trojans led 55-46 at halftime.

Young opened the second half with a three-point play and Sharome Holloway's jumper capped an 11-0 run to give Mount Olive a 69-48 lead with 15:50 left in the contest. Young's reverse alley-oop slam dunk on a lob from Maurice Horton with 9:07 left gave the Trojans a 92-63 lead. His putback with 7:13 remaining capped his scoring and put Mount Olive over the century mark.

Mount Olive built its biggest lead at 113-74 with 3:17 remaining as the Trojans flirted with matching their school record of 119 points set Dec. 1 against Concord (W. Va.) College.

Holloway finished with 15 points and a game-high seven rebounds as Mount Olive outrebounded UNCP 43-27. Creddle scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, while Jones finished with a career-high 12 points. Broering added 11 points, while Horton and Elijah Rouse finished with 10 points apiece.

Hunter led UNC Pembroke with 22 points.

A total of 55 fouls were whistled in the game -- 26 against Mount Olive, 29 against UNC Pembroke.

Mount Olive is off for Christmas break until Jan. 3 when the Trojans travel to Florence, S.C., for a non-conference match-up against Francis Marion.
