WASHINGTON -- The Charles B. Aycock wrestling team recorded the initial takedown in 10 of 13 contested matches and rolled past Washington 58-15 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference match Tuesday.
It was the season-opening dual match for the Golden Falcons, who are 18-2 all-time against ECC opposition.
"It was our first dual, so we were a little flat to start off with," Aycock coach Kevin Smith said. "We picked up steam as we went along. Drake (Gurley) continues to improve every week.
"Some of their kids are real tough to pin and you'll notice we scored some points. We looked a lot better on top this week than last week, and we've got some things to clean up on bottom."
Gurley scored a 6-4 decision against his opponent at 103 to start the evening. Teammates Derek Lancaster and Ngu Tran followed with wins before the host Pam Pack erased their goose egg with a pin at 125 and a four-point decision at 130.
Aycock prevailed in eight of the final nine matches.
Josh Overton ignited a 45-6 run with a first-period pin at 135. Ronald Lynn (140 puonds), Randy Meisenhelder (145), Tim Harrison (152), Jason Steed (160), John Robertson (171), Turner Wood (189) and heavyweight Dustin Gurley each recorded a win.
Washington's lone victory during that stretch came from Gerald Lawrence, a returning state qualifier who is the reigning 215-pound ECC champion.
"It's kind of a tune-up for the big one next Monday," said Smith.
The Golden Falcons return to action Saturday in the Eagle Invitational at Rosewood. They entertain archrival West Carteret, the two-time defending ECC regular-season champion, next Monday.
