MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College guard Elton Coffield was named the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball player of the week on Tuesday.

The award is the first this season for a Mount Olive player.

Coffield, a 6-4 sophomore from Williamston, averaged 27.0 points per contest in two games last week, including a career-high 31 points in the Trojans' record-setting 119-96 victory over Concord (W. Va.) College.

He shot 85.7 percent from the floor in that game, hitting 6-of-7 three-pointers and 12-of-14 field goal attempts overall.

The 119 points was the highest single-game team total for Mount Olive since becoming a four-year college in 1986. Coffield added a game-high 23 points in the Trojans' conference-opening 68-60 victory over Erskine.

Mount Olive is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC.

Coffield has been the team's leading scorer in each of the Trojans' five wins. Mount Olive is currently off for exams and returns to action December 15 when the Trojans travel to Pembroke to face UNC Pembroke in a non-conference matchup.

Atkins, Worrell named

to all-region squad

MOUNT OLIVE -- Warren Atkins was named to the first team and Cory Worrell earned second team honors on the 2004 NSCAA all-Southeast Region Division II men's soccer team.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) made the announcement Tuesday.

Atkins, a senior from Silver Spring, Md. (J.F. Kennedy HS), is tied for first in the nation in total assists with 18 and is tied for fourth in assists per game with a 0.82 average. Atkins was named to the 2004 all-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's sSoccer first team and earned all-tournament honors at this year's CVAC men's soccer tournament.

He also earned CVAC Player of the Week honors this season.

Worrell, a senior from Goldsboro, was named the 2004 CVAC men's soccer player of the year after leading the conference in scoring with 23 goals in 22 contests for an average of 1.05 goals per game. Worrell ranks 11th in the nation in goals per game and 15th in points per game.

Worrell earned CVAC Player of the Week honors in week one and had seven multi-goal games this season. The Trojans were 12-1-2 this year when Worrell scored at least one goal.

Mount Olive had its best season in school history, posting a 14-5-3 record and winning its first-ever CVAC men's soccer championship. The Trojans narrowly missed earning one of three regional berths in the 2004 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships, finishing tied for fourth in the final Southeast Region rankings.
