WCDS boys cruise past Parrott

Wayne Country Day's boys rode into Kinston and defeated Arendell Parrott Academy 66-51 at Ellis Simon Gymnasium.

The other Patriots squads fared batter. The girls team pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 50-33 win.

"Randy Tilley is a great coach who knows what to do with talent," said Parrott boys coach Chad Reynolds, whose team fell to 3-2. "It wonât be long before he makes them one the state's best 1-A private school basketball programs."

Adam Wright scored 23 points and Spencer Briggs added 22 for theChargers.

Wright tallied 15 markers in the second quarter as Wayne Country Day broke open a close game with an 18-5 run. Parrott hit just one of 12 field goal attempts and three of nine free throw chances in the frame.

Ten of Briggsâ points came in the third quarter as the Chargers used a suffocating full-court trap and superior athleticism to open a 20-point advantage.

"Weâre still trying to find ourselves," Reynolds said. "Weâve been battling illness and injuries (to Steven Hill, Webb Wellman, and Jeffrey Braswell), and we still haven't had a single practice where every member of the team was healthy."

Parrott's Brick Crowder battled the taller Chargers inside for 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Claude Shields added 15 points and 15 boards. No other Parrott player contributed more than three points.

"Weâre still moving players around trying to find the right combination,"Reynolds said. "Right now weâre in an adjustment period so we should only get better."

It took the Patriots girls three quarters to get better, but once they did they showed why they're one of the state's best 2-A teams.

APA struggled to shake the Chargers all game and led just 34-31 before scoring the first 16 points of the fourth quarter.

Jaclyn Ervin scored six of her 14 points in the final period, all on steals, and Mindy Hill added four of her game-high 15 points.

Elizabeth Poole also registered double figures with 10 points, six in the first quarter.

The Patriot junior varsity received 16 points and 12 rebounds from Nathan Perry and 14 points from Andy Patterson.
