Spenser Briggs led three players in double figures with 26 points as unbeaten Wayne Country Day thumped Terra Ceia 74-44 in non-conference play Tuesday evening.

Adam Wright provided 20 points and Oscar Ball added 11 for the Chargers, who climbed to 3-0 heading into the Thanksgiving break. They return to action Dec. 1 at Smithfield-Selma, which is coached by Keith Faison, who guided the Spring Creek program for two seasons and played for current WCDS coach Randy Tilley.

"We played pretty decent early," Tilley said. "We played well in spurts, but didn't play as well as a whole like I hoped we would have.

"We've got a big-time test next Wednesday."

Kyle von Essendelf led Terra Ceia with 12 points.

Saints suffer

second straight loss

GREENVILLE -- Montrel Vick led four Southern Wayne players in double figures with 18 points as the Saints dropped an 83-77, non-conference outing at J.H. Rose on Monday evening.

Delawn Armwood added 17 points, while Terriel Troublefield contributed 14 for the Saints, who endured their second consecutive loss. Derek Garris chipped in 10.

Johnnie McLawhorn emerged the Rampants' top scorer with 24 points, while Justin Blackwell added 17. Richard Shepard provided 14, followed by Perry King with 13 and Jamaul Johnson with 12.

First-year Saints coach Mike Connelley said the Saints shot 8 of 20 from the free throw line.

Southern Wayne (1-2) entertains Kinston in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams next Tuesday.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne 66, Grantham 12 -- Rico McCarter led the Warriors with 14 points, while Stacy Edwards emerged the top rebounder with five. Darian Cahill had a solid floor game with seven points, five assists and three steals. Edwards recorded a double-double in a season-opening 55-24 win against Dillard. Jenieri Cyrus contributed 15 points. Eastern Wayne (2-0) is the guest of Rosewood next Monday.
