Greene Central dominates, as usual, the EPC all-tennis squad

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's entire starting lineup earned spots on the 2004 all-Eastern Plains Conference 2-A girls tennis team, while two members took the league's top awards.

Junior Meredith Rouse picked up the player of the year award, while veteran coach Donald Clark seized the coach of the year plaque.

Senior Sarah Moore, who has captured three eastern regional doubles titles with two partners -- Amy Beaman and Rouse -- also made the team. Joining her are fellow Rams Summer Chase, Holly Mace, Christi Murphy and Ashley Harrell.

Chase and Mace are seniors.

Tarboro High placed two players on the all-EPC team -- Minta Dupree and Robin Ellis. The duo helped the Vikings achieve their best record in the past 10 years and earn a spot in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team eastern regional final.

Morgan Worthington and Mary-Linton Smith are North Lenoir's representatives. They played No. 1 doubles for the Hawks and advanced to the NCHSAA eastern regional tournament.

Completing the team are North Pitt's Nicki Leggett and SouthWest Edgecombe's Nikki Taylor. Taylor lost just three singles matches all season and is expected to be one of the Cougars' top three players next fall.

Clark led the Rams to their seventh consecutive appearance in the NCHSAA 2-A dual-team championship. Greene Central is just one of three programs to accomplish the feat along with Raleigh Broughton (4-A) and East Chapel Hill (3-A).

The Rams finished 26-3 overall and fell to Catholic in the title match for the second straight year.
