Gators, Eagles headline all-Carolina tennis squad

Regular-season champion Spring Creek and archrival Rosewood dominated the selections for the 2004 all-Carolina 1-A Conference girls tennis team.

Leading the Gators were the No. 1 doubles of Sarah Warren-Stacy Smith, who emerged the 2004 N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional champions. They helped Spring Creek successfully defend its Carolina 1-A regular-season title, and advance to the dual-team playoffs.

Also representing the Gators are Kelly Murphy and Cynthia Breault.

Spring Creek's Robert Jones was named coach of the year.

Carolina singles champion Kayce Brantham leads four selections from the Eagles. Brantham defeated teammate and all-Carolina Conference pick Sidney Worrell in the conference tournament final and advanced to the NCHSAA final four in individual play.

Fellow Eagles Leah Smith, the team's lone senior in the top six, and Kourtney Humphrey also earned spots on the 12-player roster.

Rosewood lost to Durham School of the Arts in the second round of the NCHSAA dual-team playoffs.

Rounding out the all-conference team are Alicia Wade, Laura Steinlein and Lindsey Richardson -- all from Ayden-Grifton; and Farmville Central's Robin Moore.

All-State honorees

RALEIGH -- Rosewood junior Kayce Brantham earned all-state honors along with three other Wayne County tennis players.

Joining Brantham are Charles B. Aycock sophomore Raychel Batts, and Greene Central's doubles of Meredith Rouse and Sarah Moore.

Forty-eight NCHSAA women's tennis players garnered recoginition with the criteria being that they reach the semifinal round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association individual championships.
