GREENSBORO -- Eastern Wayne's boys cross country team advanced to N.C. High School Athletic Association state meet with their third-place finish in Saturday's regional meet at Tanglewood Park.

Warrior runner Will Collins won the regional championship, blistering the course in 16 minutes, four seconds, a personal best time. Most surprising about the strong boys' finish was that Eastern Wayne had to run the regional meet without two of its top-five runners -- Michael Lawrence and Justin Bernel.

Warrior teammates Matt Interrante was third in 16:59, while Matt Vogt was 11th in 18:01.

Charles B. Aycock's Michael Scott was the Falcons' top runner, finishing 21st in a time of 18:28. Goldsboro's Adrian Lewis was the fastest Cougar runner, with a 20:36 clocking to finish 70th.

Two area girl runners advanced to the state meet as individuals. Eastern Wayne's Brittany Ham was 12th in a time of 22:10 to qualify, while Charles B. Aycock's Kylie Justo was 14th in a time of 22:15.

Goldsboro's top runner was Erin Coleman, running a 28:27 to finish 66th.

1-A regionals -- Walters, Braswell

earn state spots

ROCKY POINT -- Spring Creek's Eric Walters qualified for the state 1-A cross country championships after posting a strong time at the 1-A regional meet at Heide Trask High School Saturday.

Spring Creek's Pat Wilkens was 18th in a time of 19:20.

Walters ran the course in 18 minutes, 31 seconds to finish in ninth place. Trask's Michael Nixon won the meet in a time of 17:36.

North Johnston's Matthew Peedin clocked a 20:08 and was 34th to pace the Panthers. Chris Pangdon was first for Princeton, clocking a 20:45 for 48th. Rosewood's Terrence Williams was 53rd after running a 20:59.

North Duplin was led by Jose Ledezma, running a 21:14 for 60th.

Princeton's Heather Braswell finished fourth to earn a state meet spot, running a 21:59 and pacing her team to a fifth-place finish. Courtney Yancey was next for the Bulldogs, running a 22:27 to finish seventh and claim a spot.

North Johnston's girls were fourth and earned a place in the state championship field, led by Elizabeth Baker in a time of 22:46, finishing ninth.

Rosewood's best girls time was by Mary Jo Moore, running a 27:10 to finish 47th. Spring Creek's Barbara Witherington was the top Gator runner, finishing 52 in a time of 28:18.
