SOUTHERN PINES -- Charles B. Aycock's Kelli Forbis and Brooke Newell led the Golden Falcons to a tenth-place finish at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state girl's 1-A/2-A/3-A golf individual championship at The Club at Longleaf last Tuesday.

Forbis finished 15th overall and fired a two-day 175, while Newell notched a 213 as Aycock combined for a 388 -- one stroke behind Lake Norman for ninth place.

The best two scores of a four-person team counted toward the team totals.

Eastern Wayne's Brittney Taylor competed in the event as an individual and shot a two-day score of 180.

Defending champion Blair Lamb of East Henderson made it three titles in a row, shooting a one-over par 72.

It was the third consecutive individual championship for the East Henderson standout. Lamb won the championship last year in its inaugural year as a separate event after taking the individual championship in the all-classifications tournament in 2002.

East Henderson captured the team championship by a whopping 19 shots, carding a 314 total to 333 for Clayton in the runner-up spot. Salisbury was third at 334 and Wilson Fike placed fourth with a 341.

A total of 73 golfers competed in the tournament.
