EDENTON -- Greene Central continued defense of its eastern regional dual-team title with an 8-1 victory against previously-unbeaten John A. Holmes in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A playoffs Tuesday afternoon.
It was a rematch of last year's regional final won by the Rams.
The No. 1 doubles of Meredith Rouse-Sarah Moore seized a school-record 29th win, eclipsing their school-best mark of 28 set last season. The duo boosted their career record to 57-7 overall with a 10-1 win against the Aces' Katie Parrish-Sarah Proctor.
Moore, Summer Chase, Holly Mace, Christi Murphy and Ashley Harrell each claimed a straight-set decision in singles. Murphy rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second set to defeat Ashley Jackson 6-3, 6-4 and clinch the overall win for the Rams.
"Christi deals with pressure as well as any player I've ever coached, and she does a great job of following directions," veteran Greene Central coach Donald Clark said. "Both of those skills allowed her to pull out a tough match for the team today.
"Sarah, Summer and Ashley played very well for us in singles today. All three of them were moving their feet and hitting the ball with confidence. They were solid as a rock today."
Chase claimed her team-leading 29th victory. Mace has 27 wins overall, while Harrell and Murphy each have 24.
"(Edenton) really put up a fight in singles and doubles," Clark said. "I certainly hope that my girls will learn from the fight the Lady Aces showed today, and play with more emotion in our next match."
Greene Central (24-2) opposes either High Point Andrews or First Flight at home next Tuesday afternoon.
