WINTERVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock posted a balanced, all-around effort on Friday at South Central and claimed a 17-7 road win in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action.

The Golden Falcons had four rushers with over 25 yards -- led by Shonte Barnes, who had 105 yards on 16 carries. Aycock quarterback Wesley Whitley rushed for 47 yards on 11 carries and was 8-for-18 passing with two interceptions. Whitley finished with 134 yards through the air, including a 55-yard touchdown pass to Spruce Lee late in the first quarter to put the visiting Falcons up 10-7.

Turner Wood, who finished with seven carries for 66 yards, added an eight-yard touchdown rumble early in the second quarter to push the game to its final margin at 17-7.

Aycock (6-3, 4-2 ECC) finished with 397 total yards, outgaining South Central by over 200.

"We don't like to think we have to rely on any one athlete to win," Aycock coach Randy Pinkowski said. "We've got to get everybody involved in the game. We use a team-oriented approach. We mixed it up and spread it around, and I think that was key for us."

Defensively, Keith Cobb intercepted two passes for Aycock, while Wood added eight tackles. Cortez Gilbert provided seven tackles, as Dontay Taylor and Chris Byrd had six tackles each. The Falcon defense limited South Central to 191 yards of offense with just six first downs. South Central's all-purpose catalyst Tyrell Worthington had just 35 yards from scrimmage.

"We just played good solid technique and base defense," Pinkowski said. "The things we did were not designed to stop him, but stopping a veer, option team. We don't make adjustments to stop one player, but to stop the system the player works in."

The Golden Falcons missed one field goal try before halftime and two after intermission as the halftime score -- 17-7 -- stood the rest of the way.

Aycock will look to go 4-0 against Wayne County foes on Friday at home against Eastern Wayne. The Falcons and Warriors have identical 4-2 league records.

"That's gained importance to us this year because of the two losses to Kinston and West Craven," Pinkowski said. "We felt like we had a legitimate shot to be at the top of the league. Now that puts a lot of importance to win the county championship. Every win you put on the board brings you closer to a home playoff game.

"With all the support we get, there is nothing I would love more than that."
