Goldsboro's Camille Early had two aces and three blocks as the Cougars defeated county rival Southern Wayne 25-13, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-10 on Tuesday afternoon in the Cougar Den.

The win improves Goldsboro (4-18) to 4-13 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference.

Ashelyn James added four blocks and one ace for the Cougars, while Tiffany Burden added four aces and one block.

Goldsboro faces Wayne Country Day today.

Spring Creek

nearly pulls upset

KENLY -- Spring Creek suffered a 19-point loss in the opening set Tuesday afternoon, but bounced in thrilling fashion and nearly upset North Johnston in the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament.

However, the second-seeded Panthers rallied for a 25-6, 24-26, 26-28, 25-18, 17-15 victory and face Rosewood in today's semifinal round at Farmville Central. The winner claims the league's No. 2 berth for next week's N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

"I was on the edge of my seat," first-year Gators coach Deanna Morris said. "We couldn't finish it out, but we put a scare into them. We played really good."

Courtney Oxendine and Lorenda Brogden provided eight kills apiece and combined for five service aces for the seventh-seeded Gators. Tomeka Pride added eight kills, three blocks and 12 points on serve.

Margo Sauter dished out 11 assists and recorded two aces. Mallory Albertson complemented Sauter with an eight-assist, one-ace outing. Freshman Brittany Billups contributed three aces and two kills.

Spring Creek finished the season 4-15.

Rosewood survives

feisty Rebels at home

Senior middle hitter Jessica Hill collected a team-high 19 kills as Rosewood escaped against North Duplin 16-25, 25-12, 25-17, 17-15, 15-9 in the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles (16-5) must defeat North Johnston today to earn a spot in next week's N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Morgan Wheeler added four kills, two blocks and one dig. Abigail Barrow added four assists, two kills, two digs and two aces. Clare Narron had three kills, two assists, five digs and four aces.

Katy Morris contributed four kills.

Princeton sweeps

Ayden-Grifton

PRINCETON -- Princeton advanced to the semifinals of the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament with a 25-13, 25-6, 25-21 victory against Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (13-9) oppose regular-season champion and top seed Farmville Central at 7 p.m. today.

"The girls played with great intensity during the game," Princeton coach Trudy Rast said. "We came out strong and played hard. Our back row continues to do an excellent job digging out the ball and making good passes."

Nicole Hargis and Sarah Gibbs each recorded five kills in the straight-set victory. Stephanie Daughtry added four aces and four kills. Daughtry, Hargis and Gibbs combined for five blocks.

Melissa Worley dished out 12 assists.

Golden Falcons

knock off Warriors

Lindsey Newman and Kandace Burroughs each registered eight kills in Charles B. Aycock's 25-12, 25-17, 25-21 victory against Eastern Carolina 3-A and county rival Eastern Wayne.

Stefanie Ballance served eight aces.

The Golden Falcons (15-3, 13-2 ECC) entertain Washington on Thursday.

Conquerors extend

Calvary to four sets

GREENVILLE -- Faith Christian extended Calvary Christian to four sets before falling 7-25, 11-25, 25-22, 20-25 in a N.C. Christian Schools Association region match Tuesday afternoon.

Elizabeth Clarke led the Conquerors with five kills, while Christie Charles provided three kills and six digs. Rebecca Smith contributed three digs, one ace and seven assists.

Holly Dawson and Heather Crumpler each dished out 10 assists.

Faith Christian returns to action Saturday in the season-ending Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association tournament at Bethel Christian in Kinston.

Chargers battle

in CPIC play

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day split a pair of matches in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers opened play with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-12 victory against Faith Christian Academy. Amanda Benton collected nine kills, while Laura Ziemer and Amanda Knutson combined for nine kills.

Stephanie Knutson recorded eight digs on defense, while Amanda Knutson had four.

CPIC newcomer Halifax Academy eliminated Wayne Country Day 25-10, 25-20, 25-8 in the next round. Benton had six kills and five digs. Ziemer chipped in four kills and seven digs.

Amanda Knutson collected a team-high 10 digs.

"They fought hard," Chargers coach Juliet Pinder said. "I am proud of them."

Wayne Country Day finished 9-12.

Lauren Pratt provided a team-high seven kills as C.B. Aycock survived Eastern Wayne 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Garrett Forrest added five aces.

The Golden Falcons (14-2, 12-1 ECC) entertain Washington at 5 p.m. Thursday.

WCDS splits

CPIC matches

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day split a pair of matches against Halifax Academy in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Kayla Flanagan served four aces in a 25-23, 25-6 win.

Heather Price and Stephanie Sykes combined for one kill and eight digs. Ellen Elmore contributed five kills, one block and two aces.

Emily Best recorded two kills. Brianna Radford recorded one ace, one block and one dig.

Halifax Academy salvaged the split with a 25-19, 23-25, 25-9 win.

Elmore served six aces and had six kills. Sykes added five aces and four kills, while Price chipped in two kills.

The Chargers finished 8-11.
