Warriors run strong at ECCmeet

WASHINGTON -- Eastern Wayne claimed a pair of wins in on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference cross-country scene Tuesday afternoon.

The Warrior boys took the top four spots en route to a 16-51 victory against South Central. Washington, the meet host, claimed third with 96 points. Southern Wayne ended up fourth with 107.

Michael Lawrence emerged the top runner with a time of 18 minutes, 20 seconds. Justin Burnel finished one second behind Lawrence. Teammates Matt Interrante and Will Collins posted times of 18:22 and 18:33, respectively.

South Central's Brystol Benner took fifth in 18:46.

Matt Vogt and Drew Ziccardi claimed sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Warriors. Paul Wruck crossed the finish line 10th in 20:05.

Alan Bennett led the Saints with a 16th-place time of 20:53.

On the girls' side, Brittany Ham captured second place in 22:33 as the Warriors dumped South Central 25-32. Washington and Southern Wayne did not have enough runners to post a team score.

Natalie Taylor complemented Ham's effort with a fifth-place time of 23:27. Leslie Lewis finished seventh in 24:16 and Tara Lewis ended up ninth in 26:20.

Washington's Gina Valenti seized first in 22:09.

The Warriors return to action next Tuesday in the season-ending ECC Championships at Boyd Lee Park in Winterville.

McCall, Johnson

fare well for Eagles

Wayne Christian's Carrie McCall and Doug Johnson finished first in their respective meets Tuesday afternoon against county rival Wayne Country Day and Flora MacDonald Academy.

McCall ran the 3.1-mile course in 24:37 and teammate Jennifer Price finished second in 24:37. However, the Chargers took the team title with 29 points, compared to 38 for the Eagles.

Wayne Country Day's Allie Mouw and Anna Davis finished third and fourth, respectively. Virginia Best took seventh. Mimi Bridgers and Molly Peacock secured the eighth and ninth positions, respectively.

Johnson crossed the finish line more than minute ahead of Flora MacDonald's Steven Patterson. Teammate John Massey was fourth.

Johnson and McCall earned all-Carolina Christian 1-A Conference honors in a meet contested Monday at Durham Cresset Christian. McCall finished sixth overall in the four-team meet, while Johnson ended up fifth in 19:27.
