James Kenan wins despite missing player
TEACHEY -- James Kenan faced a little adversity and opened defense of its Class 1-A Super Six Conference championship with a 9-0 rout against county rival Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday.
The Tigers competed without fifth-seeded Brittany Crabtree, who didn't return from a field trip in time to play. Lorry Chestnutt filled in and captured a straight-set win against the Bulldogs' Meagan McGowen.
Meanwhile, Erica Brown, the third seed, got vertigo during her match and continued despite some dizziness. She fought off the nagging illness and stopped Kelly Cavenaugh 6-3, 6-2.
Brown, Christa Jones, Allison Fonvielle and Meagan Sanderlin also prevailed in singles for the Tigers.
"I'm proud of our girls," Tigers coach Chip Hardy said. "They did well considering the lack of practice due to the excessive rains and lack of matches the past two weeks."
James Kenan (4-2, 1-0 SS) entertains Dixon at 4 p.m. Thursday.
